found this on Eddie Trunk's site:

METALLICA's 20-year career will be spotlighted on MTV's annual music tribute, "mtvICON", to premiere Tuesday, May 6 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT). The show will be taped before a live audience in Los Angeles on May 3, featuring performances and testimonials from artists and celebrities who have been influenced by the band, their videos and music.

The band will perform for the first time with new bassist Robert Trujillo. "St. Anger", their first new album in five years, is scheduled for release by Elektra Entertainment on June 10.

The two previous "mtvICON" honorees were JANET JACKSON (2001) and AEROSMITH (2002).

As much as Metallica helped to shape what I beccame to love as Heavy Metal and the whole genre when I was in High School, they CERTAINLY deserve it for laying that groundwork. Even though Metallica was mostly influenced by the likes of Diamod Head, Venom, and Motorhead I hope they give those bands some props. I also hope they give SOME credit to Cliff Burton, the amazing bass player that he was.

Something just tells me that there will be no mention of any of the other Bay Area legends like Exodus, Testament or Vio-Lence or even SLAYER who has been around just as long as Metallica and NEVER compromised their sound. I have a feeling there will be the likes of No Doubt and Avril Lavigne and even the scumbag Eminem telling about how much Metallica means to them and just making it look like a Top 40 ass kissing fest of all the music that does not even matter. You can even throw all of the Limp Bizkits, Linkin Parks and Creeds into that mix as well.

Should be interesting to say the least.

Be completly honest and saying I have no clue what "MTV Icon" is due to the fact that I rarely watch the station anymore. I am cringing to know just what in the good lords name they will bring out to honor Metallica. I have not bought an album beyond the 'Black' one (Best concerts, EVER, I went to though were Metallica shows during that time frame). And like to remember em as they were.

Think of it as a display of honoring the band for being an ICON in the music industry while at the same time giving a HUGE promo for the new album.

I did buy LOAD and cried. I physically cried. I returned it the next day becasuse my favorite band of all time was dead. I did the same thing with KISS aftter they took off the make up. I rebought LOAD then and enjoyed it for what it was but it STILL was not PUPPETS or LIGHTNING!

When Garage Inc. came out i got that and got that glimmer of hope AGAIn that maybe just MAYBE they were going back to the old style. The Mercyful Fate medley was so dead on to its original I was thinking, MAYBE! I hope this new record does something to shine a candle on their past. I mean a lot of the old school thrashers have been returning to the heavy again and even Newsted is back to metal with the new Voivod album. One can hope and then one can be shattered again.

I became a fan soon after the accident and was just so moved by it and a man that I never saw live or was even a fan of while he was alive. After watching Cliff 'em All, I became VERY educated on the situation and the history of one of the most influential bands during their 1981-1991 recording career. It is stuck in my mind how Cliff would play For Whom The Bell Tolls with so much pasion.

Whatever MTV touches turns to SHIT.

I expect Metallica to sink even lower now.
