View Full Version : Where Were You During The Gulf War?

With war now imminent, I was pondering what I was doing back in 1990 during the Gulf War. Was I just as aware with the world of current events as I am now? Where were you back in 1990 when the Gulf War broke out?

I remember being 13 years old and in 7th grade and not really caring about anything that my parents watched on the news. We didn't have anything like September 11th that hit us square in the face back then. All I remember was seeing yellow ribbons tied on a lot of trees around town. I remembered seeing this on the way to basketball practice. I do rememeber the names George Bush and Saddam Hussein. I do remember how some Arab guy Saddam Hussein was being made fun of on many tv shows.
Boy how times and my knowledge have changed.

I was a little lad bout 10 and 11 years old. I remember all the Desert Storm Tshirts that were being sold, the yellow ribbons everywhere. For some crazy reason i remember tapes of whitney houston singing the national anthem at the superbowl. I want to try and put a flag or something on my car for this one

I was working at my first job out of college and living here in Jersey City. I remember being SO against the war at that time. How things change.

I remember I was on my way to a volleyball match and heard on the radio that we were dropping bombs overseas. I was about 26/27 my company was very involved in bringing our troops home after the war. I worked for a travel agency that was heavily involved with the military and government.

Thank you Ron and Fez for finally being live in DC again.
Ok let's get the boys back live in NY. Don't give up the fight.

I was in my junior year at Catholic University here in DC. I remember people thinking I was nuts for being concerned about possible domestic terrorism during the switch from Desert Shield to Desert Storm.

I remember watching CNN and the opening night of the war. It seemed surreal to be watching a war live on TV.

I remember coming home from work. My son(then 11) was crying while the radio told of the invasion. I asked him why he was crying and he said " Daddy, I don't want you to go to war and die" I still get worked up when I think of this!

Reeshy at least he was smart enough to know what was going on. I honestly had no clue then. Ignorance was bliss then I guess.

Oh yes I remember all the Desert Storm t-shirts back then and I remember thinking they were cheesy.

i guess i must have been 11. i remember not knowing anything about it and then, one day, my father picked my sister and i up from dance class. he told us that we were going to war. i was scared out of my mind. i thought we were all going to get blown up. my parents explained to me that the war was "over there", and that i'd be safe. eleven years later, and the things i feared back then came to pass while i watched. it's a sad state

I remember it was sophmore year in High School, and the school wheeled the TV's into the cafeteria so we could watch the war during out lunch break. They thought it would be educational, or something.

Freeky thing is, summer of '89, I was enrolled in a private school as a freshman (I only stayed one year.) My father thought it would be great if I was more informed, so he bought me a subscription to U.S. News & World Report. One of the cover stories that year, way before the Kuwait invasion?

"Saddam Hussien: The World's Most Dangerous Man."

I shit you not.

I was 25 and out of college for about a year. There was a recession going on and I was stuck in a job that I wasn't too fond of. With this in mind and not knowing how long the war would last, I was seriously considering joining the Navy if the war lasted for a few months. But the war was over relatively quickly so I never did join the Navy.

Here we are 12 years later and the only things that have changed are that I've been out of college longer and I don't have to live from paycheck to paycheck.

I was 25, living and working in Old Town, Alexandria,
VA. Getting no work done at work because all we could
do was sit around and talk about it. Going home at
night and wrapping myself in a blanket, holding my old
teddy bear, watching the war on TV. Writing weekly
letters to one of my best friends from high school who
was over there in the trenches, trying to keep his
spirits up. Believing we were being lied to about the
reason we were going to war (yeah, let's save
"democracy" in Kuwait), being undecided as to whether
or not we should really be going to war, but supporting
the men and women who had to go over there and do
it.

i was also in the 7th grade. my whole class wrote letters and made yellow ribbons for the service people because my best friend's stepfather was fighting. it was a really sureal time because as students i do not think we understood the severity of the situation.

I was 8 years old and in third grade. I remember coming home and watching reports on the news about the war in the middle east. Watching the scud and patriot missiles on tv had me freaking out.
