I remember hearing about this a few weeks back and am wondering exactly what happened. I know there was something in there about a Dictator who was oppressing his people and how he was then assassinated.

Was it a situation like is in Iraq now? I don'tt remember a full fledged war but I know there was something.

If any of the political minds could enlighten me that would be special!

We arranged a big CIA deal to get rid of him.

Now left wing losers talk about him all the time as if they "got to the bottom of things" even though this is probably the most publicized coup the CIA was ever part of.

It's your standard authoritarian dictatorship story. Pinochet gave Chile a relatively stable economy, but don't disagree with him or a bunch of armed men grab you in the night and you're never seen again. Sting wrote a song about it.. "They Dance Alone" or somesuch.

The CHILE Situation in the 70's

I don't think that's cold at all. I usually set the thermostat to 72.

Yes, Pinochet helped Chile have somewhat of a stable economy...but is that really a point we should be mentioning when talking about a tyrant and dictator? Pinochet has been brought up on charges for crimes against humanity...not exactly a small task to achieve. To give a person like this any credit for anything is sick. Some people also forgot to mention the part where the US helped Pinochet get into power and aided him throughout his atrocities. But it was the US that helped in the trial against him after he committed all these un-godly acts. But it all works out in the end right? ughh...

the chile situation was very different from what is occuring with iraq. certain business interests, itt telegraph co., were at play in chile, which aided the overthrow of the dictator. pinochet was helped by the cia and the itt telegraph company gain power because he was for capitolist business in chile; whereas the earlier dictator broke up international business' giving ownership back to the state.
so, the chile situation shows the negative aspects of us foreign and economic policy

A few links that are as objective as I can find

There is a lot of difference between Chile 1973 and Iraq today. At the height of the Cold War, the US got into bed with plenty of brutal dictators, especially in S. America, on the theory that they were the lesser evil to Communism. (Of course it didn't hurt if US based corporations could still make a buck or two.) In Chile, the CIA helped overthrow a democratically elected government, albeit a socialist/Marxist one and helped install a brutal dictator, albeit one friendlier to capitalism. In Iraq, we'll be overthrowing a brutal dictator.

Progress of a sort.

PS Another good reference source for this subject is the book Cry of the People by Penny Lernoux. Again somewhat left-leaning but thoroughly researched and documented. You young people could do a term paper on this and make your liberal professors very happy.
