As a Jew, I have no idea why people hate us. God knows I wish the stereotypes were true.

No people has had to overcome the attrocities that we Jews have had to do. We were literally being exterminated as race. Even in this country, the Jew and the blacks are constantly persecuted. The Jew is blamed for many things in this country, including the war on Iraq. To this day, the only stereotype that ignornat people (see above post) can say, is that we are cheapskate or we hoard our money. How about some of you stop making excuses and try a little harder. Maybe some of you haven't been properly motivated.

Dear Gil:

A question that has come up in my (mostly non-Jewish) community recently is the classic: "Why are the Jews always getting picked on?" I would be grateful if you could provide me an answer and direct me to resources that can answer this question for both school-age children as well as curious adults.

P

Dear P:

Some years ago, my wife was a 4th grade public school teacher. She had no Jews in her class and one day told her kids that she was Jewish. One of the kids in her class formed two guns with his fingers, pointed at her and made a rat-atat-atat machine gun sound.

This 11 year old obviously learned this thinking and behavior somewhere -- probably at home. When my wife told me this story, I asked myself, as your non-Jewish friends have asked you: Why?

The question is especially salient now, with the terrible outbreak of anti-Semitism in Europe of late. Blaming Israel is simplistic and another column altogether. (Israel was certainly not on the mind of my wife's 4th grader.) Some are saying and writing that we are back to the 1930's again. Books have been written with many explanation of why Jews have always been hated. This complex problem deserves lengthy treatment. With that as a caveat, I will offer a few words of explanation.

At the root of the problem, I believe is the fact that, humans are insecure tribal creatures. We are easily threatened by people who are different. Since Jews appeared on the planet, we have certainly been different. We suggested the radically different (and highly disruptive) Jewish notions that there is one God and that humans are therefore inherently equal; we dress, eat and behave differently. These and other differences have confused, offended, frightened and angered non-Jews around us.

Add to the problem of human insecurity, widespread ignorance and misinformation about Judaism. Misconceptions run the gamut from the crazy idea that Jews have horns (based on an incorrect translation of the Bible) to the inaccurate assertion that Judaism is a race. (Judaism is a "way of life" that anyone can convert to join.)

Some of these misunderstanding are innocent. Many are malicious and evil. Horrible lies about Jews have been spread by anti-Semites to ferment hatred. Also, these lies about Jews have been used for political purposes. Over centuries, in part to stay in power, The Church, monarchs, Nazis, Communists, Arab dictators and others have blamed and focused the misery of their masses on the Jews.

These lies include that Jews: killed Jesus, caused The Plague, spread AIDS to non-Jewish children, want to control the world, already control banks, government and media, drink the blood of non-Jews for Jewish holiday celebrations (this last lie - amongst others-- is currently widely circulated in the Arab world.) In the course of history, these lies have so regularly been disseminated, that they have a life of their own. Anti-Semites quote ancient anti-Semites and footnote earlier anti-Semitic writings to prove the authenticity of the lies.

On top of lies and innocent misconceptions, there is another factor that can lead to misunderstanding: Jewish etiquette can be an affront to others. I seldom see this reason mentioned, but growing up in the gentle, polite and non-Jewish Midwest of the US, I am sensitive to how Jewish manners differ.

Specifically I refer to the Jewish tradition that encourages: dissent, arguing, standing up for what we believe in, protesting the status quo and speaking up for the powerless. I view this list with pride, but it is easy for me to see how non-Jews (especially leadership) could view this behavior as arrogant and threatening. Making this worse is the confusing idea that Jews are "the chosen people." You can see some of this played out in the story of Joseph and how his brothers resented him and his words.

In all that I have written, I definitely do not mean to suggest that Jews deserve to be hated! I have tried to explain that combining human insecurity; widespread ignorance (which incl

very simple concept. early christians were not allowed to lend money... it was seen as
a sin. as such many jews throughout europe and the middle east got very rich from
banking enterprises. this is the root of most cheap jew comments. also there is the
fact that it was a series of jews who condemned jesus (christ killer comments).

i dont understand this, b/c actually if they hadn't condemned jesus to torture and
death, christians wouldn't be saved. they were just the instruments of gods will.
sorry, but i'm a pretty christian dude... anyone shocked?

I think it's just a classic "picking on the little guy" mentality with a heaping helping of jealousy. Outside of Israel, Jews have basically been in the minority no matter where they've lived, and who better to blame your problems on than the minority that can't fight back because you outnumber them by so much? That's true for most miniorities, though outside of the Jews, the rest have "homelands", countries or continents where they ARE in the majority. Even if the Jews go "home" to Israel, they're still surrounded by countries that despise them. It's always easier to blame someone else because they may own the businesses, or seemingly have more money, or look different, or sound different or have a different religion. The Jews are the "little guy" no matter where they go, and sadly, the majorities take advantage of that. And far too many people are willing to buy into the stereotypes and the hate. It's mind-boggling how long the "Articles of Zion" have been around and how disgustingly popular they are.

i mean even don corleone trusted a jew, never a black man.

i dont hate jews, really, its just that my sisters boyfriend is jewish and i cant stand him. and whenever i make fun of him i call him a jew. not that i hate jewish people in general if i like him/her as a person i dont call him a jew or any other evil epithets. but thats not limited to jews either. if i dont like u, its cuz of who u are, not what u are. its just that racial epithets are so hurtful, and thats what i like to inflict on those ppl, i dont like.

To try and compare or set levels of hate, disenfranchisement and atrocities is a bit much. Lots of groups, races, ethnicity's and religions have been persecuted throughout history. Does it bring some sort of valor or honor to say your particular group suffered the worst? I mean honestly, is the point to find the biggest suppressed group....or to recognize such atrocities in order to prevent future actions.

Not to minimize the Holocaust, but slavery was at least as dehumanizing the Holocaust if not moreso.

I see the point that you are trying to make, but i have to disagree. I am in no way trying to downplay the evils of slavery but, with slavery they viewed slaves as less than human, like property. They could be bought and sold, families could be torn apart. It was awful

In the case of the holocaust, jews were viewed as less than human...and less than property. I mean you wouldn't take all your property and set it on fire(generally). They were shot just because.... they had no value. There wasn't any respect for their them or their life. So the holocaust was indeed more dehumanizing than slavery.

now on to the question at hand. the jewish community in general is very close and try to help eachother, due to our moral teachings and the fact that we are always a minority. So after times of great turmoil, we use each other to help get back our footing. Due to this jews have almost always risen out of crises at a slightly higher rate than the majority of the country(this isn't always true but often is). And when you are down and out it's easy to hate the people who are doing slightly better than you. If you add this to all the anti-semetic writings and the jews seem to be a great target.

i agree that jews have had it worse in that span of time, but slavery had existed for centuries, holocaust lasted a couple of decades.... slavery didnt engulf a family, it engulfed generations, i dont know many black people who can trace their family's history past slavery, but i kno jews who can trace their history past the holocaust.

I'm Jewish, yet I find that I don't get along well with other Jews. I would like to learn more about my religious identity, but many Jewish people I've met in New York are very materialistic and cliqueish.

I've developed very good values and mental strength from my grandfather who developed them from his own grandfather, but it frustrates me that I have no connections to the Jewish community of today.

Like Mojo said, there are oppressed people throughout the world. The only reason the Jews get so much attention is because they are lucky enough to have a rather large voice in the most influential nation in the world.

There is no rational explanation b/c the hatred itself is irrational.

Jews have lived in every country (before being expelled, or killed. There are Jewish Americans, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, etc.

The hatred is not of a nation - it is of a diverse group of people in many nations, none of whom share a universal identifying racial characteristics.

The Jews have contributed in numerous ways to their native culture (especially in the fields of medicine and science).

It is an irrational behavior, that is unfortunately global and universal. There are far more people who hate Jews than who even tolerate them.

The Arab manifesto, calls not just for the elimination of Israel, but for the murder of Jews. That's nothing new. Spain, France, Germany, etc have done the same.

What people have problems with now, is that the Jews have finally woken up and said "never again." Unfortunately, only Israel has the power to enforce this doctrine and responds to the murder of it's population. The murder of Jews, and anti-semitism worldwide, is as an all time high since WWII. These stories rarely get publiczed. There is extraordinary biased reporting and censoring of these incidents accross Europe. The report on the terrorist attrocities against Israel is similarly spun in an anti-semetic way.

Anti Semites are irrational. Sick. Disturbed.
