View Full Version : ~Evolution vs. Creation~

I caught a special on Showtime that followed a school district in Georgia in which residents and even teachers demanded that creation be added to scientific textbooks as an option to evolution. Unbelievably the issue was passed and the likes of evolution is one to be contemplated beside that of creation. One of the arguments by the creation side, that fossils aren't found deep enough to prove the earth isn't older than around 4000 years. Carbon dating, an old method at best, can wipe this theory out. Next, the Grand Canyon is the result of the great flood. Granite carved in this manner with a flood huh? The only voice of reason was that of a science teacher at the school, from good old NYC, who found the idea and ruling preposterous. These people found a way to push the church into schools under the guise of science. They stress they want their children to decide for themselves, yet the idea is absurd with no scientific proof. These religious fundamentalists stress that evolution is only a theory that has no proof either. I believe they need to go back to school, one with textbooks from other school districts.

no one ever said georgia was the birthplace of scientific knowledge. Truth is any state in the bible belt wants the country to be like 1895 all over again complete with the slavery they support by saying there fukin Rebel Confederite flag is history and they also think abortion, howard stern, and jews are the devil. When the KKK was 7 million strong the population of Geroria was dam near 7 million whites. hmmmm makes ya think dont it

I've been trying to teach the concept of evolution to my
kids (boy 5, girl 4). Complete with trips to the
Smithsonian Natural History Museum and all. They
haven't quite gotten it yet. Last night my daughter
asked me, "So when I was born, I was a monkey, but
then I evolved, right?" Not exactly, sweetie.

geez i miss my niece, just for the cute things she says

but i just wrote an 8 pg destroying creationism. if nayone ever says creationism is th etruth, tell them that the Earth is mor 4000 years old, and that we have carbon dating to prive it, and also ask em how did noah fit all thsoe animals on stinkin boat, also what of genetic weakness every species woulld have if noah had taken only 2 of each species.

Cherry that is so, so funny.

I find it some funny that people still complain about this being taught in schools and such. It's usually the same schools which ignore the religion in school rules as well.

Wow. These people who take dates literally in the Bible are SO flawed intellectually and emotionally.

It's a VERY symbolic book only meant to convey stories and the religion's ideology. NOT scientific dates. Please.

It's kind of naiive to think that animals and stuff just popped out of nowhere and that God just made them from scratch. Why can't people who are creatist follow this logic: if God is all powerful then God has the power to make evolution happen. Believing in evolution doesn't mean that you can't believe in God.

Toocute, it has never been mentioned. I originally put this in off topic but somehow it has moved? Perhaps I was drunk. Carter, can you move this thread buddy? It seems to fit in the new "politics and current events" file perfectly. Sorry kids.

They haven't quite gotten it yet. Last night my daughter asked me, "So when I was born, I was a monkey, but then I evolved, right?" Not exactly, sweetie.
That depends, are you black? Uhh ge gee gee! Good old fashioned Norton fun.

Moe's point was brought up in full on the show and it seems that most proponents believe the bible to the letter and refuse to believe anything else. Yes there is some factual history in the bible, yet to think that it wasn't modified and twisted to fit the needs of the church countless times is absurd. Not to mention that curing bronchitis would be a miracle just a few centuries back. Our grasp of science, medicine and life in general were so of just back in the 1800's. Obviously we still have eons to go.

Oh Dear.

Well, a few points....

1. We didn't evolve from monkeys. Humans and monkeys share a common ancestor. There is a Huge difference.

2. Carbon dating isnt used to determine the age of the earth. Like its name suggests; carbon dating only works on organic [carbon containing] substances. It can date things back to about 50,000 years; but after that it's up to other methods. There are many other methods; and the 100,000+ measurements taken worldwide in dozens of countires witht these different methods tell simply of an earth billions of years old.

3. It's not easy debating evolution vs. creation becuase of all the implicit assumptions each term carries with it. Some see evolution as things changing into other things over time. That's not it. For a good debate, one must learn the subject; and studying evolution means a backing in the biological sciences.

The usual assumption re creation [often from those pushing it] is that the creation is that of the Christian God and is detailed in the events of the bible. Why this is assumed is beyond me.

4. I dont see the two terms as mutually exclusive. One can believe in the universe being created somehow; or always existing; or one of many other possibilities; and evolving ever since. One might ask the very valid question [i think this is a Hawking paraphrase]: Why does a Universe bother to exist at all? Why is there something, as opposed to nothing?

5. I dislike numbered lists.

6. If one needs evidence for evolution; i have a few dozen points; but they are not for here.

there've been fossils found earlier than 4000 years...wasn't lucy from like, a million years, or something?

anyways. interesting side note: one of my friends is taking a "human evolution" class, and in the middle of one of the lectures, a girl stood up and asked how god, the bible, and jesus fit into the whole scheme of the class.

she registered for the goddamn class...it's a class on freaking human evolution, for chrissakes...

some people are idiots.
