War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is worth more then his personal safety, is a miserable creature, and has no chance of being free unless made or kept so by the exertions of men better then himself - John Stuart Mill

No more so than before.

If we did nothing there would certainly be a terrorist attack, only the destruction caused would be more severe.

Yea I'm a little worried. I'm worried something will happen and I wont have time to get to my family or make sure my cats are safe.

But I'm not going to be changing my life because of it, I'll still go down to the city every weekend, I'll still go on vacation like planned next month.

I really think the media needs to take a step back, because they are over sensationalizing the "what ifs" and that is what gets the public worked up over "possible" attacks.

Isn't there already a similar thread on this topic?

Pedantry aside, am I afraid of a terrorist attack?

No.

What good will fear do me if another attack happens? What good does fear do if it keeps me inside my home cowering from some ephemeral 'possibility' of danger?

No good whatsoever.

We're on "Hard Orange" alert status now. That sounds like an alcoholic beverage to me, but that's mainly because I'm wiped out from my job and training.

Americans are being asked to be 'vigilant' and to report 'suspicious persons and activity'. Police presence has been increased in some of my favorite places to visit - Grand Central Station, the Met and the Empire State Building, among them in NYC; I'm sure all the monuments & memorials in DC have extra security and you probably can't go to the top of the Washington Monument.

There are plenty of important, powerful people who can DO things about it being scared for me, what's the sense in me catching myself up in it too?

I, like so many of you, live in D.C., but I'm not really scared, no.

Mildly concerned.

No.

I grew up in NoVa during the Ronnie Raygun 1980s when the question wasn't whether
or not there was going to be a world war, it was a question of WHEN! Back then I did
have nightmares of the big one dropping. Well, that and zombies attack, but I also
watched a lot of George Romero movies in the 80s - I blame on Count Gore de Vol for
that one.

Today I live a mile from the Pentagon - I work one mile from the White House - heck, I
even go to the same Home Depot that the snipers hit! Maybe I'm naive, but I figure
that I'm more vulnerable if I visit my families in Ohio, Kansas or North Carolina!

I hate to say this, guys, but I've been ready for a while now. I am a flight paramedic, and for the past few days, I've been syking myself up for anything that should happen.

By Gods good power, I hope nothing does happen but if it does, I'm ready!

I said a while back and believe terrorist groups will respond to the invasion with attempts which hopefully will all be averted(Whether it be in the US or overseas).

Am I scared? Honestly, I'm aware, but not scared.

Admittedly....a little bit. Yeah. Why not....when unfortunately....it is a realistic possibility.

But not frightened enough to change my lifestyle...or alter the way I think. I am a firm believer in fate. If it is my time....then so be it. I worry more for others.

And recently...I found some happiness.....and I can't let the negativity of war lead me to abandon that.

Is that selfish? I hope not.

I'm much more concerned for Americans overseas than I am about Americans in the
US. From missionaries to media to tourists, they are the ones who are really in harms
way right now.

c-dub....one thing about life....expect the unexpected and things you could never imagine of occuring are possible. I highly doubt anyone expected or could conceive of a 9-11 scenario actually occuring, yet it did.

This is so true. You don't have to be in the millitary to be putting your lives at risk. During the last Gulf War, my family and I were living overseas because of my dad's job with The Agency, and those were some very, VERY scary times. This was even before the first World Trade Center attack, so terrorism hit home for me at a very early age. But all the government workers we have around the world just keep doing their jobs as best they can, no matter what, and that's a heckuva thing.

I'm scared of the "police state" that my America has become. Laguardia had machine gun turretts on the tall buildings during WWll. I don't think we are in that kind of danger and these terror alerts are an excuse for us to live like commies with army checkpoints and papers and crap...
I remember thinking how bad the Russians and Germans had it in the 70's. Now we live like those poor bastards did we just don't know it.

I am extremely scared. I don't think I've changed anything about the way I live, but I know that should anything happen, I would be stuck like I was on September 11th. The only way off manhattan is via tunnel or bridge, and the first thing they did on September 11th was close them all down.

I live downtown, work downtown and my kids go to school downtown. I know I'm in no more danger than anyone else, but there's no where for me to go should anything happen again.

My only peace comes from being closer to my kids now than I was on September 11. I worked in Queens, and couldn't get to them until 2 am on that night. I don't think I could handle that again.
