Fans boo as U.S. national anthem is played

MONTREAL (AP) -- Fans booed during the playing of the U.S. national anthem before the New York Islanders' 6-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

The sellout crowd of 21,273 at Bell Centre was asked to ``show your support and respect for two great nations'' before the singing of the American and Canadian national anthems.

But a significant portion of the crowd booed throughout ``The Star-Spangled Banner'' in an apparent display of their displeasure with the U.S.-led war against Iraq. More than 200,000 people turned out for an anti-war demonstration in Montreal last Saturday.

``I'm sure there are a lot of people against the war, but some things people can't control,'' said New York's Alexei Yashin, who is from Russia. ``They were probably showing what they feel about it.''

Teammate Mark Parrish, a native of Bloomington, Minn., was upset hearing the boos. ``I came to the game pretty pumped up, but once I heard that it really got me going,'' Parrish said. ``So I guess I can thank them a little bit for getting me more pumped up.'' http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=ap-anthembooed&prov=ap&type=lgns

I think that might be retaliation for when the Canadian anthem was booed at an Islander game. But I'm sure the war didn't help.

They won't be hearing the U.S. National Anthem in Montreal much longer -- if DC gets the Expos.

if DC gets the Expos.

As much as I would hate to see my beloved Expos leave, would they then become the Washington Senators of old? That would be really cool.

As much as I will state that they were just showing their opinion, I feel it was in bad taste as there was an American team in town. It is only going to be nautural in these times that people will let their voices be heard. Not that it will change anything.

Hey this thing pisses me off, but be aware that their guys are fighting side by side in Afghanistan with our soldiers, I am sure that when they read about what the F-ing French Canadians did they will be pissed off just like us. Simply disgracefull. BTW I live right near the Isles home rink, and the dickheads who booed the Canadian national anthem got yelled down by the other fans bigtime. I don't care what nation you are talking about somebody died for that flag, so give it the respect it deserves.

Honestly, who cares.

Mostly everyone in the US says that they do not care what the world thinks of us, yet when they act it, everyone yells, screams, etc. So obviously you all do care.

As I said- I bet the Royal Canadian Soldiers on the ground fighting with our soldiers would care. So why shouldn't we. Its a symbol of Freedom-but no a few drunken French Canadians booing doesn't bother me.

who's yelling? just because i think canadiens are the worst and that what they did is bullshit doesn't mean i care what they think of me. no one is yelling or screaming in this thread, they are just stating an opinion.

just acknowledging an act doesn't make us care about someone's opinion. maybe we care in the fact that it pisses us off that suck a faggot country has the balls to do something like that when they're just assholes, but to say that means i will think about it anymore after this post is not correct. if it makes you feel better i guess i cared when i heard what happened, and i cared when i wrote this post.

but in 5 minutes that last care on my mind will be what canada thinks about us, fuck em.

Canadiens president apologizes for fans who booed U.S. anthem

MONTREAL (AP) -- The president of the Montreal Canadiens apologized Friday for fans who booed the U.S. national anthem before Thursday night's game against the New York Islanders.

``The Montreal Canadiens organization has always held a high respect for its neighbors and friends in the United States, and we look forward to maintaining this strong and positive relationship,'' Pierre Boivin said in a statement.

``We apologize to anyone who may have been offended by this incident, and would encourage all fans at the Bell Centre to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of our game and our two great nations.''

Before the game, the sellout crowd of 21,273 was asked to ``show your support and respect for two great nations'' before the singing of the American and Canadian national anthems. But many fans booed throughout ``The Star-Spangled Banner,'' apparently expressing displeasure with the U.S.-led war against Iraq.

``It is our firm belief that this kind of behavior has no place in the context of professional sports,'' Boivin said. http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=ap-canadiens-anthembooed&prov=ap&type=lgns

Wait - Canada has a military? o.O

Seriously, does this surprise anyone? Montreal's got a lot of French folk.

Besides, I know some Canadians, and they're a very different culture in the sense that they don't understand AT ALL our concept of patriotism (largely coming, I believe, from having an incredible national identity crisis), and the Canadians I know all seem to have the same back-handed "I love America, I think you're great, but let me list to you 1,948 things I see wrong with your nation" mentality.

Associated Press

MONTREAL -- Montreal Canadiens fans cheered during the final verse of the U.S. national anthem Saturday night following a video address by Hall of Famer Jean Beliveau.

In a recorded statement, Beliveau asked the Bell Centre crowd to respect the playing of both national anthems before the game against Carolina. Only a handful of people booed as Charles Prevost-Linton sang ''The Star-Spangled Banner'' in virtual silence before the crowd applauded during the final verse.

On Thursday night, a large number of Montreal fans, voicing displeasure with the war in Iraq, booed throughout the anthem before a game against the New York Islanders.

Canadiens president Pierre Boivin issued a statement Friday, apologizing on behalf of the organization for the conduct of ''certain fans.''

Saturday, the team asked Beliveau to record statements in French and English, which were played on the arena's video scoreboard before the singing of both anthems.

''During these difficult times, many have an opinion on world affairs,'' Beliveau said. ''Nevertheless, the Montreal Canadiens have been proud to honor both Canada and the United States prior to games for over 50 years, and they hope to maintain this outstanding display of sportsmanship.

''Please, join us here at the Bell Centre in the singing of both national anthems to celebrate the game of hockey. Thank you, and have a good evening.''

Also Saturday night, fans in Toronto cheered during the anthem before the Maple Leafs played Buffalo.

one from Washington DC.

Now that would be inviting a jinx...two teams in the same area named Senators and they both fail. I think they would shoot for a better name.

Cause of this story I am rooting for the Rangers to make it that much more difficult for the Candiens to make the playoffs. And also to keep themselves out so the Isles can get there too. Habitantes, not for long assholes...

Well as was said before, right after Canada won the gold medal, fans at an Islander game booed the Canadian national anthem. I think both examples are stupid and reasons why hockey needs less drunks who have no respect for people.

These are also the same people that rioted(yes rioted), and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage when Maurice Richard was suspended for the playoffs one year for hitting someone over the head with his stick..
