It's not 'shock and awe'. It's war....you know destruction and death.

Sorry, but that's what they've been referring to this specific massive air campaign as. I don't work for the media.

I'm not shocked and awed. But I am itchy and gassy.

Even Jabba is shocked and awed.

"Ney Jabba IS badda!"

Baghdad is being torn apart and civilians are undoubtedly being killed... How is that grounds for humor?

Don't be sorry. It is reality now and noone likes war.

Chickenhawk, my comment was not aimed at you...sorry if you took it as such.

I find it grotesque that our media or government comes up with these catch phrases or make it seem as if it's something it is not. Bombing, killing, and death isn't "shock and awe"..it's war.

The media loves this war. Don't you hate it when the anchors barely suppress a smile while discussing airstrikes.

Your words have humbled the great Jabba.

Sometimes even the mighty can cry.

- i was just listening to a General detail how they spend countless hours using technology to isolate a target, see if there are any mosques, hosptial, schools or apt building near it, if there are they chose a different weapon for that target..and do the calculation over again..and they do this for THOUSANDS of targets.
what other country would go so far out of the way to avoid civilian causualties in war??

I AM SO proud to be an AMERICAN

It is pretty cool in that regard. This is clearly a very precise attack despite it's massive scale, and that's very much obvious from the constant, expanisve news coverage. Innocent lives WILL be lost, but it damn sure looks like our guys are doing their damndest to keep those numbers to a minimum.

The weird thing is is that lights are still on. Even if we're not hitting the power plants, you'd think the Iraqis would kill the lights.

The big explosions are undoubtedly the "bunker busters" which are being directed at the palaces and C4I centers.

This is fucking awesome.

We ARE kicking ass, but we ARE trying to minimize the civilian casualties.

Mmmm.....it's two great tastes that taste great together!

I find it grotesque that our media or government comes up with these catch phrases or make it seem as if it's something it is not

... The term "shock and awe" was first coined by former military officers Harlan K. Ullman and James Wade, in a 1996 document that formulated a strategy for war in a post Cold War world....

They defined seven elements of the "Shock and Awe" approach:

Objective: "Control the adversary's will, perceptions, and understanding."

Use of Force:"Control the adversary's will, perceptions, and understanding and literally make an adversary impotent to act or react."

Force Size: "Could be smaller than opposition, but with decisive edge in technology, training, and technique."

Scope: "All encompassing."

Speed: "Essential."

Casualties: "Could be relatively few in number on both sides."

Technique: "Paralyze, shock, unnerve, deny, destroy."

Ok...so it's military throwing around jargon which have alternative meanings and innuendo's. It's still annoying and a catch phrase. They might as well advertise them....oh wait..they already do all over tv.
