I know it's wrong but I made a bet with one of my left wing friends I said the war would be over by March 28, 2003 . He said f'ng July what a dumb f'er he thinks that this will be just like Vietnam. Any way how long do you think? The bet was for $20 I don't care I know it's wrong to bet on war but the surrender will be buy Friday.

The original Persian Gulf War ceasefire was on April 11.

The way we're going, THIS war may end by that date.

As long as there is terrorism in the World, there will always be war. It's hard to say when this war will be over! Just keep our servicemen in prayer that they will come back safely to their families, and for the one's who do not make it back, remember their bravery.

This thread seems like it oculdve been opened yesterday. We always knew the tough part would be the inner city battle, going through houses and fighting in the streets. For Bush to declare the end of major combat operations or whatever he called it, back in May I blieve of 2003, is the biggest joke ever. Nobody in the world ever thought we would have a hard time fighting the Iraqi Military. All that begining shit was nothing more then getting to the battle area. After a period of time we got to the point of conducting raids and other sililar shit that continues as much today as it did 2 years ago.

When will this war be over? We either will be there forever, or leave the place a disaster area, even if its 10 years from now.

what baffles me is how the original poster said that if the war lasted
4 months , that it would be the same as Vietnam. Goes to show the
complete lack of history in our culture.
When muslim extremists are in jail, change their thinking or are dead. Or...the "jiihad hotspot" leaves Iraq for another country. Maybe we should all sit back and let them pick another country or three to hijack.

I'd say we would be closer to leaving once the Sunni start to realize they need to be a part of the Iraqi leadership (which is starting to take place), and the US actively involves them. I know they opted out of the elections, but they now realize what a big mistake that was and who among us truely thought they would go so well. This move ultimately allowed the Kurds and Shiites to gain all important government posts.

If the outside insurgents didn't have the Sunni support (which they are losing), they would be drastically less effective. The Foreign contingent has been overstepping their bounds in essence killing women, children and even Sunni civilians. This is why the Sunnis are finally realizing that the foreign contingent's true mission is to start an all-out civil war. So by including the Sunni's you would drastically cut back the Iraqi insurgency and cripple the foreign forces. But do you really think Bush and his admin would really look to this as a viable plan? Hell, they don't even do the whole "planning" thing. This whole Iraq effort to them simply translated is about war profiteering and payback. Twist all you like, but this is the bottom line, and our troops are dying evey day based on lies.

What's the point of this question when the American people aren't a part of the decision-making process? Instead, we're lied to every day and too many of us are too disinterested or willingly deluded by ideology to even seek out the opinions of those who should know best. Success or failure in this war is entirely dependent on the handful of individuals who have wanted this for years, dragged us into it with false pretenses and fabricated associations with 9-11, fucked it up every chance they got and have been lying to us about it from the start. Guessing when it will end is about as useful as a celebrity death pool.

The politicians say we're winning. The generals aren't so sure. How Bush hopes to persuade a wary nation to stay the course.

How, then, to explain the very different versions of reality in Iraq that come out of the mouths of top Bush administration officials and of senior generals on the ground in Iraq? On Memorial Day, Vice President Dick Cheney declared that the Iraq insurgency was in its "last throes." Yet last week, testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, General Abizaid said that, actually, the insurgency has not grown weaker over the last six months and that the number of foreign terrorists infiltrating Iraq has increased. Pressed by Rep. Loretta Sanchez, a California Democrat, to choose between the general and the vice president, General Casey seemed to struggle. "There's a long way to go here," he testified. "Things in Iraq are hard." He said that the allied forces had weakened the insurgency—but acknowledged that the number of attacks has remained steady.

Good article Yerdaddy, but most of it's fimiliar ground. Plus the
political support is still there in Washington even though the American
public is lukewarm.

And
the "different versions" of whats going
on doesn't surprise me at all. Its the difference between what makes a
good General and what makes a good Politician. And i dont think
"repackinging" information constitutes lying to the American public,
though Cheney's comment was either uninformed or simply wrong. (I dont
see a political benefit to saying we're almost there, when we're not)
The American public would be probably be horrified at what really goes
on in any war, but might support the goals attached to it. And the
reality is if you want to achieve certain goals, you need to do it
militarily at times. Sometimes you get lucky and a regime collapses by
itself, but usually thats not the case.
