CNN, Fox, and MSNBC is reporting that a missing RAF aircraft may have been downed mistakenly by a Patriot missile battery. This is a bad end to a bad day, and if anybody is even thinking about making joke about it, shame on you.

These things happen in wartime-they are actually figured into projected casuality estimates prior to going into battle.

Fox said the plane was supposed to send a signal to the missle saying it was a friendly, but it didn't for some reason.

Very sad. Both sides of this argument can agree on that. I hope it's the last friendly fire casualty.

Sounds like the IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) failed.

Last January a British veteran of the first Gulf War expressed concern regarding
American "friendly fire" -

Of the 269 Americans killed during the first war, 121 were of a result of "nonhostile
actions," as they like to put it.

Or the interrogator signal was malfunctioning on the A/C as well or possibly the missiles or one of the ground stations

War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is worth more then his personal safety, is a miserable creature, and has no chance of being free unless made or kept so by the exertions of men better then himself - John Stuart Mill
