Thats what someone called me today here at duke for supporting our actions overseas. This poor misguided soul decided to attack me for saying out loud in class that i'm proud of the troops and wish for the iraqi people to be liberated. Yet, an anti-bush ignorant yutz decides to fire back with "You are so blind that this war is only about oil." I wanted to lose it. I'm so sick of feeling guilty for supporting our country. Why is it the "in" thing for stupid college students to so violently hate the government? I actually heard a person on my hall say "we're the real evil... we're the western world." Do these people know what they're saying? Don't they realize that they could only say such things in free societies where free speech and liberty are granted to all?

While in NY this past weekend i happend to be in the city during the protest. Some of the protesters i respected because they were people who were truly passive. They believed that all aggression is bad and that is respectable because they live their lives as such... But when i saw a person taking bong rips while holding up a "*$%# Bush" sign, i'm left wondering about the genuine nature of some of these anti-war advocates.
Orignially i had no opinion. But as i slowly became addicted to television news over the past couple of months, i realized how our military campaign is necessary to free people that live under an awful regime. I'm not a war hawk... I dont go around saying things like "We should blow iraq fucking sky high" although, i do know some anti-war advocates who said the former about Afghanistan. Talk about things that make you go hmmm. I simply want those people to be liberated and obviously it seems like 12 years of trying to negociate has done little. Had there been a way to resolve this conflict peacefully, i would've been all for it. But the fact of the matter is: Saddam rejected ever offer he recieved and did little if anything to try and appease the world community. I think its time that we as a nation come together and simply support the troops. Now that 70% of our nation supports our actions, i dont feel like a minority, but an oasis of popular opinion. Maybe it's because i'm in college surrounded by the budding left, maybe its because kids are afraid of a draft, maybe its because the stars are aligned differently, but i feel out of place. I support America. I support our troops. I have faith in our president. If that makes me a warhawk, i guess thats what i am.

If you actually read this entire post, i appreciate it.

I feel so sorry for people that still have the misguided view that we are in Iraq for oil.

That that were true...Why didn't we stay there in 1991?

We want to eliminate the evil person that runs the country and create a peaceful regime that will be a useful part of the world and help to bring peace to that part of the troubled world.

Fuck inbred hillbilly rednecks who couldn't even spell college, nevermind get accepted and who spend their lives doing menial jobs a trained monkey could do. Fuck them for feeling superior to college educated people for no reason and for being willing to follow President Bush off a cliff, and being proud of it, because they did it for their country, and for feeling they're goddamned fine Americans for it.

But, hey, I kid.

No, there's some truth to what he said.

I know Mojo has posted before that people from all walks of life have been protesting this war, and he's been right.

HOWEVER, when you're dealing with the "spoiled rich kid who doesn't know anything about life, but feels guilt because he's rich and 99.9% of the rest of the world isn't / is protesting because it is hip and or will help get them laid with hippie chick or guy / punk kid who causes more of a problem than is part of the solution" stereotype, it's the kids from these colleges which are the ones who contribute to it.

Not saying they're ALL that way.

Just saying that yes, SOME of them are that way, and they're the ones who are giving everyone a bad name.

I'm going to college right now, and for every spoiled rich brat you see there are 10 other students who are working their asses off and taking out loans to get themselves through. But everytime somebdoy mentions college students, we are always spoiled brats who have no business thinking anything and should spend our whole lives being grateful for what we got. It's really infuriating.

So, in the words of Sideshow Mel, "My opinions are as valid as the next man's!"

Exactly. Sometimes a douchebag is just a douchebag, no matter what politcal views they spout. Hell, *I* was getting pissed reading Carter's post, and I wasn't even there...it's SO insanely hypocritical to use your right to speak out and/or protest against the war and then turn right around and condemn, dismiss and basically ignore the other opinions of another person just because they present a different view.

Generalizations like this really are pointless.

Wasn't there some other thread where someone was saying that our gov't's pro-war stance is more valid than a celebrity's anti-war stance because all the folks in the gov't who decided that this war was necessary went to college? so which is it? College Good? college No Gooc?

Nice pick up Too Cute...You are right. On one hand they are giving legitimacy to those who have degrees which side on their opinions....and on the other hand those who are in college who oppose the war are leftists that are taught to think that way by colleges.

Pick a side and hold your facts to both ends..not just where it applies to your side.

Hbox, you're not picking up on some of the sarcasm in the posts. Although, you still seem really bitter towards anyone who points out anything that would diminish the anti-bush or anti-war campaign. If you read my original I post, i explicitly say that there are anti-war protests that are comprised of people whom i respect. Yet, the majority of college students i've met that protest dont understand that there is no hope for another decade of cat and mouse inspections.

What's most disappointing is the fact that few of the anti-war advocates i've met, repsect the opinions of others regardless of what "side" they are on. Its as if you're 100% wrong if you disagree. I find it really shallow.

I'd just like to point out, YOU HAVE DONE THIS in the reverse. Not in the specific sense - arguing education - but in a broader sense.

EVERYONE, to some extent, gives, or tries to give, legitimacy to those who share their point of view, and have tendency to generalize, usually negatively, those with opposing viewpoints.

That said, I again reiterate - it's not fair to make huge, broad generalizations, but there IS some truth in those generalizations. No one is labeling, for example, veterans who are against the war as leftist no-nothing hippies. If they label college students that, though, the generalization is apt to stick in some cases, because some of those college kids ARE leftist no-nothing hippies.

the generalization is apt to stick in some cases,

Then it isn't really a generalization, is it? :)

EVERYONE is generalizing. To call carter a warhawk and killer of the innocent without hearing his opinions and why he is for the war is generalizing. To say that anyone who is against the war is a liberal know-nothing hippie without hearing their reasons is generalizing.

In both cases the appelations may well be true, but you never know until you ask.

You know, I've been reading argument after argument, and here's my sweeping generalization: Most people seem to think they're just better than the person who doesn't agree with them...

Mostly because I'm not seeing any real point/counterpoint arguments, I'm just seeing the same rhetoric thrown around, myself included, but to degrade into name calling just proves this.

What is a "no-nothing college student?" why do people who didn't / aren't going to college think they're better or know more than someone who is in college? If these protesters are coming out of, say, Columbia or Cornell, or even MIT, they're "no-nothing college students?" WTF? that's as degrading and ignorant as a racial slur, yet it's "perfectly acceptable" to throw that around?

As degrading as a racial slur? Are you insane? It's a slander against their intelligence maybe, but anyone with a high enough confidence level would just regard the comment as the bullshit of the one who said it. There is NOTHING behind the insult even close to the depth of pain and suffering that the word "nigger" can evoke when used against a black person. You're talking out your ass here.

And if I say "know-nothing college student", I am NOT referring to whether they know how to split the fucking atom or not. If I say that, I'm not questioning their intellectual capacity to...I don't fucking know, be an engineer or something like that. I'm questioning how genuine they are. Are they going out and researching their own beliefs? Are they looking at things from all sides, and THEN forming an opinion? Or are they just spewing rhetoric, such as Mr. War-for-Oil that Carter here had the displeasure of encountering?

If they're just spewing rhetoric without any hint of looking at or understanding things from the other side, than I would dub them "know-nothings".

That's the ugliest Liberalism there is. Do you mean black people aren't confident enough to to regard the word "nigger" as bullshit and ignorant, and instead just crawl into the fetal position for all the "pain and suffering" that word caused them?

After spending many thousands of dollars and many years of my life going to college, and not a "party" school, (if anything it's one of the most depressing places in NJ) I'd like to think I've learned a few things about life, not everything, but enough to not have my opinion dismissed like a 5 year old...

College students aren't necessarily ignorant, just idealistic. It's the one time in your life where you can put that much effort into things that you are convinced will change the world for the better. Some of them are dumb. Some aren't. Guess what - it's the same way in the real world.

Stop generalizing. Period.
