I remember a study last year that said the human body really only needs 6-7 hours of sleep a night, and that anything more was just too much and could actually be harmful. Basically it implied that the longer you sleep, the more relaxed your heart gets, so that when you wake up, it has to work twice as hard to get back to its "waking pace", and that over many years of this, it'll eventually wear your heart down and could weaken it, leading to problems later in life. Does this sound about right?

If that's the case Mojo you really need to stop those alcohol and drug binges. The sleeping for 2 days afterwards could be bad for your health.

But I can say when I sleep 12 hours or more sometimes on weekends, I wake up feeling awful and more tired than before I went to sleep. I don't know if that has to do with what you're talking about but I can see how it can be true.

6 to 7 hours

Is that what your boss told you so that he could get you to work more hours in a day?

Last I heard, the perfect night sleep is 8 hours, but definately no more than that. I tend to sleep about 6 hours a night, but I am still tired everyday.

The most I've ever slept for was 15 hours. A very good friend of mine in college right before Thanksgiving break, and I was a mess. I wasn't able to really sleep until I got home for break.

I remember hearing that anything over 8 hours was considered not good for you, but I don't really give a fuck because I only feel well rested after 10 or more hours of sleep (which barely ever happens).

Coaching genius John Gruden only gets a couple of hours a night. I also have a very successful friend like this who only sleeps 3 hours. I don't understand such people...zzz zzz

I've tried sleeping 7-8 hours, and I usually still feel tired when I wake up, but I notice that I get into "waking mode" much quicker and I'm not as sluggish during the day...ten+ hours, I feel "rested", but I usually spend the day sitting around on my ass, and I'm lucky if I even get dressed. Less than seven, and I start eating babies.

so all those times you've sat on your ass IMing you probably haven't been dressed? Hmmmm, now that's something I can't decide if I want to imagine or not.

Yeah he gets something like 3 or 4 hours. He went to a doctor about it, and the doctor said everything was okay, and he should try to treat it as a blessing and not as a curse. His dad was the same way..

There have been various studies on this topic and it's generally agreed upon that adults generally do well on 7-8 hours of sleep per night (that "wake" mode is telling you something, Mojo), teenagers need a little more, maybe 10 -12 hours and children about the same.

If you sleep more than this, chances are good that you are either (a) sleep-deprived or (b) depressed and you should probably see your doctor.

If you sleep less than this, you have most likely created a "sleep deficit" and your body has trained itself to function on less sleep. And weekends, for many of us, tend to be spent as "catch-up" time . . . which only serves to throw your body even more out of whack.

Then, of course, there are those few folks identified as "geniuses" (or even "psychopaths") who get/got very little to no sleep each night. A good example of this was Leonardo da Vinci. It is rumored that Leonardo got less than 4 hours of sleep every night, to which his notebooks are a testament. If you haven't seen them, DO IT NOW. They are AMAZING.

My advice, even though I'm not HK, is to continue to get the sleep you function best on - you've stated 7-8 hours - as much as possible. You'll probably find that your days run more smoothly and you think more clearly when you get this amount of sleep each night.

Well, that would explain the insomnia.

I believe James Madison slept only 3-4 hours per night.

on the weekdays i get about 5-6 hours. i usually go to bed at 11 and don't need to get up til about 7, but i wake up at 4 every weekday. from that time to the alarm goes off i watch the clock. i get maybe a good half hour in that 3 hour span.

weekends though i get about 10. usually because i'm so tired from my lack of sleep during the week. plus i don't have the same nerves going through me.

i can't wait to go to bed now.

Thomas Jefferson as well. Just tour his home!

Maybe next time I go to C'ville for work I'll make it a point to go visit Monticello.

And AJ, which one are you, 'genius' or 'psychopath' ? <g>

during the week, i've been sleeping about 4.5 to 5.5 hours a night. and i feel like crap every morning when i get up for school. sometimes, i can't keep myself awake on the subway. i think that's probably a sign that i need more sleep. but, sometimes, there just aren't enough hours in the day...

Mojo you really need to stop those alcohol and drug binges. The sleeping for 2 days afterwards could be bad for your healthunlike the alcohol and drug binges, which are completely healthy.

It's the L-1 life for us,
It's the L-1 life for us!

Sweetie, it's called being an L-1.

I'm not saying it's healthy, but you will never go through this again. Until you start studying for the bar exam.

Trust me. I know these things. Exactly why I'm not sure, but I do. And you will be fine.

In the meantime, you may want to figure out where in your schedule you have time to slow down so you don't burn out. Maybe do a couple of silly dance moves on your way to the library. Or take notes in a different color pen one or two days a week. Yes, it sounds really silly. But it might help.

In the meantime, make sure you are eating regularly and healthfully. Your body will thank you later for this. Stress is tough enough without the right fuel.

i like to get 8-9 but lately i've been averaging around 4 (Band Turmoil upsetting my stomach)

then there is always the factor of whether it's good solid sleep or alot of waking up inbetween... the interrupted sleep stinks...

I normally get around 4 or 5 hours during the week. But, even when I get 8 hours I'm still tired. The perfect amount of sleep for me is about 6 and a half. Not too much, not too little.

How much sleep should someone get?

The easy answer is, "as much as they need."

The need for sleep is dependant upon several factors including general health. Most importantly however, is chronological age.

Infants and children require the greatest amount of sleep. Even teens need a good 10 hours. Adults are best off with 7-8. Seniors sleep the least, with 4 or 5 hours being fairly typical. Seniors are also most likely to suffer from insomnia.

Depression causes either insomnia or hypersomnia at any age.

People having a manic episode sleep very little.
