I'm certain that extraterestial life exists. It's a virtually infinite universe and as such the existence of "alien" life is not just probable, it's a statistical certainty.

However, unless FTL speed is a possibility, and not an absolute upper limit, the only way to cross the void is in generational ships. These monstrosities would not be saucer shaped but more like Dyson Spheres.

If FTL is possible (and current theory suggests it might be - e.g. consider the tachyon), travel b/w all but the closest stars would still take a long time. If aliens came to earth you'd be sure they'd do something other than appear to drunken farmers or peasants.

I believe alien "sightings" have increased since the advent of Photoshop. To my knowledge there were no flying saucers seen until flight became fairly commonplace.
