View Full Version : Why does my dog eat her poop?

I feed her enough. She's slightly overweight. There's nothing different coming out than there was going in, it's just transformed. The dog won't stop eating her poop, it drives me nuts! I'm totally serious when I tell you that sometimes I think she takes a crap just so she can have a snack.

I want to carry Fez around in my pocket.

She really eats it, or does she lick it? This is why I don't have any pets.

OLDSCHOOLBARB - "Coprophagia," or eating shit has been going on in the canine species for a long time. No one knows the exact cause but there are a couple of interesting theories which seem to make sense:

Theory 1. It's an evolutionary remnant from wolves, who do not have a regular diet. They eat their poop when they're hungry to satisfy their rumbling belly. Even though our pups are well fed, the ability to eat their poop may continue to have survival value.

Theory 2. It's a symptom that the dog isn't digesting it's food efficiently. They eat the poop becuase there is still some nutritional value to be obtained from it.

Theory 3. You may be giving your dog regular meals, but at long intervals. Food only stays in a dog's stomach for 7-9 hours. After that they get hungry and will eat what's available even if it's their poop! Try feeding your dog more often.

Recomended solutions to this include:
1. Clean up the poop as soon as it is expelled. If there's no poop around your dog can't eat it.
2. Sprinkle a mixture of black pepper and bitter apple over the poop. The dog will quickly learn to avoid it. (Except the dogs who actually like black pepper and bitter apple. LOL)
3. Try a dog food with more carbs and fiber and lower fat. Apparantly that aids the digestive process in removing the nutrients from the food and gives the dog less incentive to eat it.

I hate missing posts about poo. I'm a poo expert.

Here's some things Hordeking didn't quite touch on:

Lots of animals dine on their own shit...rabbits, gorillas, dung beetles and flies, and...dogs.

Most animals that have a diet consisting mainly of plants eat their own shit mainly because plants, as a general rule, are hard to digest efficiently, and whatever nutrition they miss on the first run, they get on the second. This is like to a cow chewing its cud, 'cept without the regurgitation.

Another reason why animals eat their shit is that it contains vitamins produced by their intestinal bacteria. The animal is unable to absorb the vitamins through the intestinal wall, but can get at them by eating the shit.

Finally dogs and flies eat poop is that their shit contains a certain amount of protein. Dogs are particularly fond of cat poop because cat poop is high in protein.

There ya go.

My dog ate the baby's poo, so if they can eat someone elses poo they figure they might as well eat their own.

So does this mean that
humans should eat their
own poopies to gain more
of the vitamins that couldn't
be passed through our own
instestinal walls?

I think that if dogs eat their
own poopies it's ok,as long
as they don't drink their
urine. Don't worry about the
doggy-poopie breath either.
After all dogs are known to
be the cleanest animals
since they lick every orifice
repeatedly. Shit (not
literally..LOL) if the dog can't
eat all of their poopie, they
can always get a doggie
bag.

Nope, "poopies" contain bacteria that can kill you. Dogs are especially adapt at eating their "poopies" b/c they have the proverbial cast iron stomachs. But dogs can and do die from eating other dogs "poopies."

I love the word "poopies!"

Wow, I'm glad I only have one dog! She doesn't drink her pee but it's probably just less convenient for her.
