this seems like the best test for the Us military... the soldiers , the weapons , the technology is being put to a good use.

This country should be impressed as i am how strong we are and unrelentless. Saddams army has nothing,...no warships, no airforce , and minimal technology. The only thing that keeps them strong is using human shields and civilians homes against us.

As of today a 100 iraqi vehicle convoy was destroyed by the usa and a 100 vehicle convoy is headed to their way toward Us troops....the iraqis are gonna be slaughtered

god bless america

This comment leaves me dumbfounded! Our soldiers have to be "tested" i.e killed or wounded, to satisfy your need to see that we are the best army in the world? I give up-I really do-goodbye.

Some test.
The real test will be of the American people if, after whipping the Iraqi army, the place turns into a California-sized West Bank--ish quagmire with our troops and the governing authority we install getting hit regularly with suicide bombers, mines, car bombs, snipers and the like.

I'm glad all the death and destruction and maiming of innocent Iraqis and American soldiers is such a turn-on for you. I guess its a good thing you weren't around for WW2. You'd blow a sixty pound load.

Deathstroke,
I'm not attacking you per se. but that comment-I spent 4 years in the military and it ain't no fun and games-it can be a very deadly business-even in peacetime.
Trust me- these poor guys don't need to be tested any more than any of us need any more hardship in our lives- I just want them all to come home in one piece but I know that's not going to happen for some of them-God bless everyone of them!!

Who, me?
Quite the contrary. If you want to go on the record and say the Iraqis will all surrender and the terrorists will ignore such a target rich environment on their front doostep, an imposed regime will be welcomed and the sun will break from the clouds as the strings swell and the choir lifts it's voices in harmony, go ahead.

And people like Staples are "suprised" that so many Iraqis are wary about what we'll end up doing...we're gonna have to prove our intentions pretty much every step of the way, and it's not gonna be easy...

"There will be an explosion of joy and relief" from the people of Basra---Paul Wolfowitz, March 24
An article in yesterday's Washington Post
somewhere around page A29 - in the war section, described how before the war, the CIA was warning about the kind of resistance we are facing. The Pentagon disagreed and said the Iraqis would roll over and there would be no opposition in the south. The CIA reports were ignored and watered down.
Interviews with the troops on tv and radio confirm that they were told there would be no opposition in the south.
By the way, my California-sized West Bank scenario is what I think will happen after we've creamed the Iraqi army.
It's not what I want to see happen, and I have supported our military all my life and I would love to be proven wrong.
Also note that by going in, we have united our enemies in the region and our supporters find themselves marginalized.
In the intelligence biz, this is known as "blowback".

I love this country and all, but sometimes it pisses me off how cocky we can be at times.

Our leaders, both military and government, made it sound like this war would be easy and in turn our military troops believed it. What they found out was completely different and we ended up being the ones in "shock and awe".

Two of our troops were at a press conference yesterday and said they were led to believe that the Iraqis would give little to no resistance and they were surprised at what they really got. Our motherfucking military is sending kids out there completely unprepared and that in turn leads to more casualties.
Cockiness leads to surprise. Surprise leads to shock. Shock leads to fear. Fear leads to death.

We better wake up and stop underestimating people because that will be our inevitable downfall.

And what they were surprised by was that the Iraqi soldiers ambushed them while dressed in civilian clothes and using civilians as troops as human shields -- all violations of the rules of war.

Our motherfucking military is sending kids out there completely unprepared and that in turn leads to more casualties.

Wrong. These guys are extremely well-trained. I read the accounts from that press conference and one of the guys, although badly wounded, didn't lose his cool and did the job he was trained to do.

And as unprepared for the dirty tactics I mentioned before, most of the deaths so far have taken place because of accidents, friendly fire, or that ambush by the U.S. soldier.

Honestly, and I hate to resort to name-calling in any debate, but you are a complete moron. Do you have any military training? The American military has THE FINEST training programs in the world, honed over hundreds of years of battle experience. These kids are as prepared as you can be for any wartime environment. Don't think for a second training won't kick when the shit hits the fan. How dare you? You think our soldiers are a bunch of pussies?

I never said we don't have the finest training program, but if you go in expecting no resistance you won't be as on guard. Our leaders led our troops to believe this.

Hey, don't get mad at me, our own troops said this THEMSELVES yesterday on TV.

Oh, and another thing, show me ONCE where I said they were pussies. I fully support these men and women and think they are the bravest people in the world to risk their lives for us.

Neither. It was directed at the post that mentioned that the Pentagon essentially ignored the CIA's suggestions that Iraqi resistance might be at least a "tad" more than they were expecting...

Still doesn't mean they weren't trained and combat ready. They were going to war, obviously they were expecting SOME resistance.

Hey, don't get mad at me, our own troops said this THEMSELVES yesterday on TV.

Don't let a handful of troops speak for the entire US army. There are a lot of vets in there too who don't even blink at the site of "stiff Iraqi resistance".

Oh, and another thing, show me ONCE where I said they were pussies. I fully support these men and women and think they are the bravest people in the world to risk their lives for us.

Ok how about:

Cockiness leads to surprise. Surprise leads to shock. Shock leads to fear. Fear leads to death.

Fully support my ass. You're suggesting that US Soldiers immediately cower in fear and wait for death if they don't encounter what they expect...that they aren't trained for the unpredictable....that they are cocky but really cowards....You're calling them pussies. I'm sorry, that is my definiton of a pussy.

And life has proven you wrong. Our military has quickly adapted and beating serious ass. We're 50 miles from Baghdad...the capitol city (which is like the ultimate military target)...in less than two weeks of combat. Two weeks!
Doesn't sound like the work of shocked and afraid soldiers.

Fine, place words in my mouth if that's what makes you feel better. I know in my heart how I feel about our troops and it is far from thinking they are pussies.

I wasn't going to bother since I didn't feel like having more words placed in my mouth, but I decided otherwise. I'll be mature about this and try to explain it clearly. If you still feel like I think our troops are pussies, then all I can say is you're still wrong.

Now, what I was saying basically is our troops have feelings. Your statement basically inferred that our troops are some kind of machines void of any emotion. No matter what they come up against, they wouldn't be fazed and would go about their battle plan as instucted. My quote of Cockiness leads to surprise. Surprise leads to shock. Shock leads to fear. Fear leads to death. to you automatically means I'm saying they are pussies? Sorry to disappoint you, but that's not what I was implying at all. All I was saying is they are human, they have feelings and when tensions run extremely high, SOME, and I repeat SOME people may lose it. They feel pain, they feel hunger, they feel exhaustion, they feel shock, they feel fear, they feel what we all feel.

Our military leaders should never have told them this was going to be an easy fight with little to no resistance. They should have sent them in there fully expecting the unexpected and from all reports that wasn't the case. Hell, forget that two soldiers said this. One of the higher ranking officials who's name escapes me said it as well.

If you still feel like I think they are cowards, then that's too bad. Sure, we are kicking some major ass. I do not deny that one bit. All I'm saying is if they went in not expecting a fight and weren't fully on their toes, they could get killed. For that I blame their superiors.
Now, I will say this again which you apparantly never saw in other threads. I fully support our troops and I think they are the bravest men and women alive to take on this task and to fight for us. They have more guts than I could ever dream of having and for that I salute them.

A more powerful enemy would be a true test.
If we fought North Korea and slaughtered them, although it's unlikely we'd ever fight them, that would be impressive.
