Ok, here's the problem... I finally kinda sorta have an idea of what I want to go into school/career wise.

I'm hoping to major in history and either minor or double-major in communication

now, if i major in history and successfully get a degree, is it possible to go into teaching, or is more schooling involved? or does it depend on university you go to and where you plan on teaching?

if you can clear this up, i'd appriciate it... there's no rush.

I believe to become a teacher you're going to have to be a teacher's assistant for a year or two for free basically to observe and put it on your resume.

I think being a teacher (not a professor) doesn't require much schooling at all after college.

i'm plannin' on getting a history degree and then going into teaching and I don't think there's a lot of schooling after college most of the time. I have a lot of college students come back to my school after graduating so they can do teaching internships and they usually say they only have to do it for a year. so it's not much of an added commitment.

My wife switched careers a number of years ago from actuary to math teacher.

In order to get a provisional appointment teaching in the NY (and LI) public school system, you need a BA in any subject. (My wife's was in math.)

However, to maintain your job you MUST get a MA in education (or related field) w/in 3 years of getting appointed. Most people want this anyway b/c there's a 5,000 per year salary jump to start. Then at "30 above" (i.e. post grad courses that weren't used for your masters) there is an additional larger salary jump.

If you have the option teach in LI. The pay is MUCH better than in the NYC school system, and the students tend to be better as well.

Still, no matter how you slice it teachers are grossly underpaid. Our society doesn't seem to value education nearly as much as it should.

To teach in a private school, you don't need any degree at all. Most religious private schools pay slave wages. Exclusive private schools (i.e. the kind the super wealthy send their kids too) pay very well, but they generally want PhD's as instructors.

If you want to teach on the undergraduate level, you can get a job as a TA w/o an advanced degree, but the pay sucks. (About $2500 a course in queens college). Adjuncts make better money. Money starts to get good when you're a full time professor with tenure. Of course to get tenure, you have to do a lot of research and publish books and articles. Most tenured professors have at the very very least Masters, although most have PhDs or thier equivelent. (JD, PsyD, DSW, etc).

go into Drama, become an actress and singer...

everytime i watch TV, go to a movie, or go see a Broadway show, I say to myself "That is a Fun and Great Way to make a living"

There are an unlimited number of channels on TV now, all kinds of theaters other than Broadway, in all towns across America, and plenty of News Stations. And all of these employers need people to fill the time...

Don't be shy...

Me, I'm an old fart but if I could go back I would go to college and try to act, sing, or play a musical instrument...

Best Of Luck with anything you do!

i don't trust guidance counselors at all. in high school, i had a very bad experience with one. basically, i'd been screwing up, and then, ON MY OWN, fixed my behavior. a few weeks went by with me being all good, and i get called in to the guidance counselor. let's just ignore the fact that they let the problems go unchecked for two or three months before finally calling me in to help me. so, i go in and explain how it's ok now, and that she can check my attendance record and all; i hadn't missed one class in weeks. she tells me that, so long as i continue the good behavior, she doesn't see any problem, or any reason why she needs to call my parents. i was very thankful... until i come out of class the next day and my mom's there because the fucking cunt whore bitch guidance counselor called her in anyway. guidance counselors are supposed to be there to help, and you are supposed to be able to trust them enough to feel comfortable going to them if you really have a problem. that is NOT the way to get people to trust you.

My wife switched careers a number of years ago from actuary to math teachervery wise move. actuarial work is the worst! i made the move from actuary to law. if this doesn't pan out, it's math teacher for me, as well.

1. As in all vocations, there are good guidance counselors
and bad guidance counselors. Don't let a few bad apples/
kid touchers spoil the whole bunch.

2. Shelle if you do not yet have a degree, which I am
assuming you don't, your best bet to is to apply to/attend
a state college and enter their teaching certificate
program. That way, you do it all at once: get your
undergrad degree, student teach, and get your teacher
certificate. You can do it in the normal 4 years of school.
HK's advice was right on for someone who already has a
degree.

If I am correct in my assumption that you live in NJ, I
suggest a school like Monclair, Kean, TCNJ, FDU, etc. They
are the best pipelines in to public school teaching in NJ
since the majority of teachers and administrators went to
schools like that. You can (and probably have to) get your
degree in history concurrently. If you are already in
school, simply take a walk over to your school's education
department and find out the details.

Also, even though you are out of high school, feel free to
walk back into the office and make an appointment. At
the very least you can pick up some information on
schools and lay the groudwork for the recommendations
that you will need later on down the line.

ARI and SHEEPY had bad experiences w/their guidance counselors.

Ari's experience in particular was awful. The counselor acted in a most unethical and unprofessional way. Confidentiality can only be breached in a limited set of circumstances. Certainly, under any circumstance it is inapporpriate to flat out lie to a client.

As DAN pointed out, there are good counselors and bad counselors. Try to remember Sturgeon's law - "...90% of everything is crap." It's the 10% of competent people that you should seek out.

I've heard so many stories like Ari's that I'm considering doing a year as a school-sponsered therapist. I'm leaning towards counseling grad students, but haven't ruled out undergrads and high school. The issues presented in such a setting are very varried, and provide numerous opportunities to provide intervention on many levels.

Then again, I'm also considering a position in a rape/domestic/child abuse center - at a hidden location. I have some reservations b/c of my gender. Several rape victims have told me that immediately following their assault they'd rather talk to a female therapist. Ultimately, when they see me, it's post the immediate trauma and they're more able to cope and benefit from a male therapist.
