Apparently they've shut it down this morning, to traffic, subways and pedestrians... the news doesn't have much info expect its due to "intense police activity". They also said the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges were temporarily shut down (I heard all this on 1010WINS).

Anyone know whats going on?

I live in the area.

They were probably bored, seeing as how most people don't work around there.

This morning Good Day New York made it sound like it was a terrorist attack. They said three men of Middle Eastern descent were on the bridge, dropped three packages, and dove over the side into the East River. Construction workers alerted the police. Now it turns out to be a bunch of dirtbag losers pulling a prank. Way to go! I hope they get locked up.

yea, this morning on all the radio stations they kept saying, "heavy police activity on the Williamsburg bridge - its been shut down - we don't want to speculate - but this looks bad"... I kinda think that was speculating.

This stunt actually affected the stock market!!

Early reports of the incident, plus inaccurate reports of a suspcious package on the Willy-B, shook world stock markets as wire services flashed the story around the world.

In London, the Euro hit its highest level against the dollar on Friday since the start of the Iraq war on rumors that a suspicious package was found on the bridge. The dollar dropped through $1.0744 per euro to stand half a percent down on the day, its lowest level this week.

Morons!!!

I've noticed that anything weird lately gets me thinking it's a terrorist attack.

Yesterday, I was getting on the FDR drive from water street. It's an overpass that's under the Brooklyn Bridge, and for some reason, we were parked there for like 20 minutes because two cars at the end of it weren't moving. I couldn't see far enough to see if it was an accident or what.

Anyway, I'm sitting there thinking, this is a ruse and their blowing up the bridge and I'm directly under it with no ability to get away. I went through scenarios of reversing into the cars behind me or simply jumping off the overpass (about eight stories high).

Anyway, I think I'm nuts. I hope I'm not alone.

Not at all. Yesterday just after I got home from work I heard wailing sirens from a number of firetrucks, police cruisers, and emergency vehicles racing up the street just outside my apartment. The last time I heard something like that was 9/11. So, I checked the TV for any "Breaking News" reports thinking there might have been an attack.

I never did find out what it was all about.

You're definitely not alone. Today as I was walking to work, I heard sirens as I crossed the "outbound" lane of the Holland tunnel. I got SO nervous, especially thinking the Williamsburg Bridge was shut down.

I'm always thinking of "what if" scenarios.

Has anybody seen those "be prepared" commercials that say to keep a flashlight, extra batteries, canned goods, water, prescription medications on hand "just in case?" I know it's a good thing to do, but it really hit me that we have and can be attacked on our own soil.

I've been doing this for years. At 125th and Broadway the subway is elevated, and to turn left on to 125th you get stopped right under the tracks. I ALWAYS imagine what I would do if the tracks started collapsing.

Well guess what. The little median concrete island thing in the middle of broadway rught next to the traffic light? It's all BUCKLED IN. The concrete broke, there's a big hole. and a little shack (some thing to do with the subway I guess?) that's on it is at a big angle now! I HATE driving to my mom's house now because I have to drive under that stupid overpass!

When I moved over to VA last month, the county sent me a pamphlet/booklet dealie that had all kinds of these suggestions as well as emergency/municipal phone numbers.

You know what's really dumb? I want to buy a moped because in "Deep Impact" the only people that got away were the ones on mopeds because they could scoot between traffic.

I figure ill put the two boys in the little flat area between the seat and the wheel, and get a good back pack of supplies together and pretty much survive the end of the world.

I don't usually dwell on terrorist attacks, but certain things do set me off. They always test the emergency broadcasy system on WJFK, but they always say at the start, "this is a test." Well, at like around 2 AM, the news feed suddenly cuts off and the alert starts going off...WITHOUT the test announcement. For the next few seconds, until they finally DID say it was a test, I think I was the most terrified I've ever been in my life. I just completey froze, felt all the blood drain out of my face, and my heart was pounding so heard I could hear it in my ears.

I have a better idea. I know many "secret" caves in Brooklyn. If anything goes down I'll send you the directions. I have plenty of Cipro and Atropine, just in case. Can you bring a pie?

My latest info, not thats it's accurate, and keep in mind that I'm drunk: The 3 guys were just drunks who dove off the bridge afer throwing cases (or sixes) of beers into the water below. Construction guys called it in to 911 as suspicious.
