View Full Version : Worst Sports Injury You Saw?
FUNKMAN

i've seen a bunch, Joe Thiesman, Moises Alou, lineman for the Bengals, running back for the Miami Hurricanes but I would have to say the injury to Napoleum MaCallum's knees when Ken Norton Jr pulled his upper body forwards and both of his knees were bent in the opposite direction than normal...
what's the worst sports injury you saw happen and how'd it make you feel?

Napoleon McCallum's (sp?) knee turning inside out, Robin Ventura's ankle sticking out of his sock (very much like Kendall), and Tim Krumrie's jelly-leg at the Super Bowl were just about as bad as it gets.
Then in "other sports", there's Sid Vicious's leg breaking (already covered)...and much the same was the breaking of the leg of one of ECW's Headhunters. What made this injury probably worse was that (a) he was 400 pounds coming off the top rope when the leg gave way, (b) THE SOUND...it caused an instant gag, & (c) in the confusion that took place immediately afterward, the Sandman cleared the ring by caning everyone in sight, including the poor fat bastard who was immobile with pain. He took a cane shot to the top of his head while "Damage Control" was attempting to get to him & put him on a backboard.

Seeing it happen live wasn't too bad... it was when they showed it the following night on Nitro over and over and over while breaking chicken bones for sound effects that made me ill.

as an athletic trainer i'm the first one out there when an athlete gets hurt, but i've been lucky enough to only deal with some pretty minor issues. mostly torn acl's where the athlete screams bloody murder & a few broken faces. one of the worst i've seen was a rookie softball player who completely failed to move out of the way from a pitch heading straight for her face. she needed a few stitches where the ball hit & it left her with a broken nose & broken eye socket. needless to say she gave up on softball. that kind of stuff doesn't really get to me, i just clean up the blood & deal with the broken bones later.
the worst thing i've had to live through was when a basketball player went up for a rebound & got flipped over so he landed on his head & then went into a seizure. he had no history of epilepsy & the seizure was purely due to the head injury. it lasted about 45 seconds but it felt like forever. afterwards he became really animalistic. couldn't speak & gained a lot of "retard" strength so it took his whole team to hold him down until the emt's could arrive. all he would do was moan & groan & try to get up. i remember when his mother came over she said "it's mom, don't bite me!" because he was so out of it. that wasn't cool. i really hope nothing like that ever happens again.
After the McGahee hit this weekend, does he get a special lifetime achievement award for being crushed?

Blood doesnt bother me, I watched my friends face get destroyed when I was a college cheerleader by some chicks foot. He shot blood out like it was an artery and I just went to get the anti-blood spray while everyone else freaked out. He ended up being EMSed out because they thought there might be some major bone damage done but he ended up being ok. Its the bending of joints that shouldn't happen that gets me.

After Joe Theisman I refuse to watch replays of injuries. If I happen to see it live then there's nothing I can do. But as soon as they start showing the replays I just turn away from the tv. Can't do it. I will always have the vision of Theisman laying there with his ragdoll leg as Lawrence Taylor stands over him and puts both hands on his helmet in sheer terror and then starts screaming at the Redskins sideline to get someone out there ASAP. If that didn't paint the picture for you then here's this:

At my first soccer game as a student assistant I was at the scorer's table when a guy made a sliding tackle right in front of me. The only problem was the foot of the guy he was tackling stayed planted while the guy's body twisted. He went down and lifted his leg only to see that his foot was pointing in the wrong direction (it had twisted 180 degrees) and he was howling in pain.

a woman died about 30 feet from me during a bike race in my hometown, she was going too fast and went off the street and hit a tree, i cant think of a worse moment than hearing she was dead, i didnt know her but she was young and fit and it was a really nice day out and then all of a sudden it was just the worst thing ever. i was almost in shock i think, i got nauseous and felt faint , sweaty etc. the goddamn sound, ugh...
at least when i found my dad dead or my grandparents died they were older and sick, i even knew a 5 year old that died from brain cancer and it didnt fuck me up as bad as that woman, that might not sound so great but i knew he was sick and had time to get used to the fact that he wasnt going to get better, something about seeing a young healthy person die in such a random way was just too fucked up ...

Ever seen on tv or utube, the Malarchuck bleed-out ranks right up there.
Ever seen in person, a mid-40's guy who while skiing in the trees took a wicked fall and ended up with an open spiral fracture of his tib/fib. Given the pain the guy had to have been he was remarkably calm and easy to work with. Still bleed a lot and packing off the exposed bone wasn't very pleasant.
Not really a sports injury bit did happen on a ski hill so worth mentioning. One of the maintenance guys lost a couple of fingers while working on a backup diesel engine and I got the job to find the missing digits before he was sent off to the hospital.

Psycho Sid Vicious breaking his leg in half on a missile drop kick.
The problem was it wasn't a missile drop kick. He was trying to do a jumping big boot to the face. The leg that he tried to plant into the mat wasn't able to handle the landing.
I remember there was a syndicated American Gladiators clone in the mid 1990s called something like "Battle Dome." On the premier episode, there was an event similar to king of the mountain but the mountain spun. During the first round of this event, either the contestant or the gladiator-type person tumbled and his ankle spun more than 180 degrees.
I'm not sure why they aired the injury, but it was a taped show with a very visible very gruesome injury. Which the replayed after the commercial break.
Incidentally the show is on crackle.com
