Falkland Islands invaded by Argentina, starting conflict with Great Britain (1982).
Near present-day St. Augustine, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon comes ashore on the Florida coast, and claims the territory for the Spanish crown (1513).
Jeannette Pickering Rankin, the first woman ever elected to Congress, takes her seat in the U.S. Capitol as a representative from Montana (1917).
The first American theater devoted solely to movies opens in Los Angeles. Housed in a circus tent, the venue was dubbed "The Electric Theater." Its earliest pictures included "New York in a Blizzard." Admission cost about 10 cents for a one-hour show (1902).
Samuel Morse invented Morse code, developed an electric telegraph, and established the first telegraphy line in the United States. In addition, Morse was an accomplished artist whose portraits are still exhibited in major art museums today.
Morse began work on a telegraph in 1832 and spent several years developing a prototype of an electric telegraph, which he demonstrated for the first time at the Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown, New Jersey, in 1838. After several years of lobbying Congress, Morse received a grant to build an experimental telegraph line from Baltimore to Washington, D.C. In 1844, Morse transmitted his historic first telegraph message, "What hath God wrought?" (1872).
The first commercial telephone service using toll lines began on April 2, 1879. Operated by District Telephone Company of New Haven, Connecticut, the service connected Springfield and Holyoke, Massachusetts, towns about eight miles apart (1879).
