In Old School there's a great thread about the most influential American Band.

Lots of people picked The Beach Boys.

Here's my question to you all on this topic:

Not the band...the album.

Which is better overall (quality, influential, etc.)

Pet Sounds or Sgt. Pepper's?

My pick: Pet Sounds.

I'm always very loyal to the Beatles. So I have to go with Sgt. Pepper.

When Pet Sounds was released...no one bought it! Capitol Records viewed it as a failure initially. I'd have to say Pet Sounds as my choice but it would be close.

"Pet Sounds"...but "The White Album" easily slays them both.

Excellent, and tough, question. But I gotta give it to
Sgt. Pepper's. Mojo's right about the White Album, tho.

no matter how many times you listen to it you always find something new

I agree, Pet Sounds by a mile. But then again, I always preferred The Rolling Stones over The Beatles.

pet sounds is better but (as always) i agree with mojo, revolver the white album beats both.

it might be because for entertainment i'd rather put on pet sounds then sgt peppers but i'm more likely to put on revolver.

Without Pet Sounds there would be no Sgt. Pepper's -- period.

But SMiLE would have blown them both away.

And there'd be no Pet Sounds if it weren't for Rubber Soul. So what?

I vote Sgt. Pepper's. I find the way it synthesizes so many different styles of music so flawlessly far more impressive than Pet Sounds, despite the fact that they are both very cohesive concept albums.

Did it necessarily influence culture as much as people say it did? I don't know. I wasn't there in the late sixties and the early seventies. My impression, however, is that when people say that Sgt. Pepper was the album that changed music into an art form, they aren't so much saying that Sgt. Peppers was the first album in which music could be considered art, for even Pet Sounds can certainly be considered such, but rather that it changed in the public's mind the concept of pop music.

Plus it has the greatest song of all time, A Day in the Life, on it!

I should have explained myself better: both Paul McCartney and George Martin said that Sgt. Pepper's was directly influenced by Pet Sounds -- much the same way that Brian Wilson was influenced by Rubber Soul.

I love the demo version from the Anthology Vol 2. It's interesting to hear the song being built.

I guess for me it's the harmonies on Pet Sounds that give it the edge.

I understand that, but my question still remains: if these albums influenced each other, so what?

Doesn't change what is contained in these albums and how their contents influenced the rest of the world.

As far as the harmonies on Pet Sounds go, I agree, they're spectacular, creepy, beautiful and weird all at once, but most of them were Brian Wilson recording with himself.

At least the Beatles' harmonies were sung with each other on Sgt. Pepper :)

Plus that version has a bitchin' extended drum solo from Ringo at the end, and then they cut the poor bastard's work out for the final one!

?? Don't remember that..... You must be thinking of the solo at the end of the third version of Strawberry Fields on the album, which DID make it to the final cut, but not as a solo...

Going OT now but I didn't find this version of the song so tremendously different from the finally released one. Some of my favorite demos on the Anthology albums were for Strawberry Fields (the second of the three on the album), Something (oh my what a beautiful song. Never paid much attention to it on Abbey Road, but when it's just George and his guitar...), I'm Looking Through You, hmm can't think of too many more offhand.

I agree with you 100% but in the context of the thread I thought it important to note the influence that Pet Sounds had on Sgt. Pepper's.

Rubber Soul/Revolver influenced Pet Sounds, Pet Sounds influenced Sgt. Pepper's. And Sgt. Pepper's caused Brian to have a breakdown because he couldn't finish SMiLE in time or top Sgt Pepper's. My point is that this "competition" spawned some great albums.

As far as the harmonies on Pet Sounds go, I agree, they're spectacular, creepy, beautiful and weird all at once, but most of them were Brian Wilson recording with himself.

That's partly true. Brian did most of the vocals on demos, but everybody sang on the final tracks -- even Dennis and Bruce Johnston. Carl's lead on "God Only Knows" may be one the best lead vocals in rock history.

I think you're thinking of "Good Morning, Good Morning".

Me too! I love the original demo for Strawberry Fields, the original version of "I'm Looking Through You" is so much better than the final, and the stuff off of Volume 3 is amazing -- especially the stuff from The White Album and Abbey Road.

EDIT: This should be a 5-star thread!

TooCute's right, I'm getting myself all mixed up...

What I KNOW I love on the anthologies so much more than the original is the accoustic version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...who needs Clapton!??

they're spectacular, creepy, beautiful and weird all at once

That sums up the pet sounds albulm perfectly
and i have yet to hear anything that has brought out the same feellings then that being said I would have to say that from reading everyones arguments that maybe one is not better than the other maybe the fact that each one had some influnce on the other ones record makes them equal in the record books
and if it never had these two albums then we might not have the music we hear now
so in my thoughts there is no winner in best albukm i think it is a tie

I have original copies of both albums. They're both great albums. It's so hard to pick which one is better. To me they are timeless. I always thought Brian Wilson was a genius, but got messed up with drugs. Pet Sounds had the harmonnies and Sgt. Pepper had new and exciting musical arrangements. I really like both equally.
