View Full Version : Ginny or Guinea?
blakjeezis

When refering to Italians, what is the correct spelling? Now from what I understand the name comes from the buiilding of the Suez Canal, where Italian laborers were paid one Guinea per day. That seems that it would be g-u-i-n-e-a, but that seems so formal and not quite right for an epithet. Ginny, on the other hand, could easily be confused with a certain tasteless webmistress. Which way is correct?

I don't know why but that term seems like the weakest slur (if it is one) ever.

Italian laborers were paid one Guinea
The exchange rate is currently one guinea for three wops so I go with that spelling.

The proper spelling of that particular ethnic slur is Guinea.
My name, Ginny, is pronounced with a soft 'g' sound--like "jinny'. 'Ginny" is never pronounced with a hard 'G' sound, as is found in "Good," "guinea," or "Gack."
Ginny is short for Virginia, BTW.

I preffer Dago, Grease Ball, or Guido.
I looked up the origin of this slang word and this is what I got:
Pronounced "gi-nee." Came from "Guinea Negro" and originally referred to any Black or any person of mixed ancestry. This dates back to the 1740's. By the 1890s it was being applied to Italians--almost certainly because they tend to have darker skin than Anglo-Saxons/Germans. By 1911 the term began being applied to Hispanics, although the reference to Italians is the most common. Derived from Sicilian immigrants who paid in Italian currency, Guineas.

I'm also Italian. That made me feel OK to post on the slur. I had second thoughts about my original post, but edited it out because it would be like referring to a friend as "my Jewish friend" and not just "my friend." In any case while we're at it, what's the proper spelling for eggplant? Moolie? Muligniane?

Anyone know why a guinea pig is referred to by that name? It was in South America well before New Guinea. In fact it was a staple of their diet! Ugggh!
That's why guinea pigs hide when they see a crock pot.

I'll take it. Aren't Scorsese, Pacino, and DeNiro the current ruling Guinea triumvirate? If they say it's that way, then that way it is.
