Bruce Campbell IS...The Punisher.
I actually wrote a Punisher screenplay as a lark 3 or 4 years back, and I still think it kicks ass. I called it "The War Journal" instead of the little-too-cheesy "The Punisher", and it was told in flashback...it opened with the police raiding one of the Punisher's "safe houses" where he stored weapons and supplies...and the titular "war journals", natch. The movie is then the story of what the police discover in the journals...
The key I discovered with the story is that too many people want to "noble" the Punisher up, while forgetting how utterly insane and psychotic he is. I played up the idea that this guy was basically a serial killer who just vented his killings into more "socially acceptable" ways. I stuck with the millitary history, saying he lied about his age at 16 to join the war in Vietnam around '70 (My script is set in the late 90's, so I went ahead and made him 40-ish), and his commanders pretty quickly noticed his zeal for and skill at killing a LOT of people without getting killed himself. He was swallowed up into special and "black" ops and was basically a government killer for the next 25 years before finally retiring and settling down with his family as an NYC cop before the family ends up murdered by gangster thugs, he goes even MORE nuts, yadda-yadda-yadda...basically I made it that the only things that kept him "sane" was the fact the government "allowed" him to kill hundreds of people, and the wife and eventual children he had at home, the only people he could show affection for. Once those people were taken from him, he had no reason to remain "in control", so he snaps. The only thing that keeps him from fragging people left and right is the extreme millitary training and control he was subjected to for more than two decades, so he's able to set the cold, analytical mindset over his bloodlust. But make no mistake, the man IS insane...and NOT a good guy. If the movie were done right, it would be done that way...I just don't buy that this guy just suddenly "snaps"...this has to be a nutjob who's BEEN crazy his whole life, but just had it barely under control...
