Too bad Layne Stanley couldnt kick his heroin habit. Alice in Chains was a no gimmick kickass band that had alot of great songs. Their EP Jar of Flies was one of my favorites with the haunting sounds of "I stay away" and pure sounds of "no excuses" Their CDS Dirt and Facelift were very good hard rockin CDs. You cant forget their unplugged performance in which they did alot of their popular songs with a different sound.
Kinda makes you think when the #1 rapper is white and the #1 golfer is black

I agree. Just like Van Gogh had his absinthe, Lane had his smack. But their music was great. Jar of Flies is a desert island disc for me. Along with Jeff Buckley, Sigur Ros, Tortoise and Aphex Twin, that disc gets the most heavy rotation on The Chairman's cd player at 3AM.
But I must admit, Lane's death was a bit anticlimactic. When he died, a friend of mine called and said "isn't he already dead?" Him OD'ing was about as much a surprise as it will be when Reagan finally kicks it.

I'd pick them over Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and the other Seattle bands every time. They had some bad ass songs and a heavier sound than the others.

i couldn't agree more. they are one of my favorite bands ever, and i rank "dirt" as one of my top 10 albums. while not a surprise at all, it was such a shame to see layne go... although i guess he was as good as dead anyway, as far as the music community went. by the time he died, i don't think anybody expected him to start singing again, even if he survived.
Their EP Jar of Flies was one of my favorites with the haunting sounds of "I stay away" and pure sounds of "no excuses"on that album, i'd have to say that "nutshell" is the stand-out...

I think they were probably the most talented of the Seatle bands. Jerry Cantrell is an extremely underrated guitarist. I saw them at Lollapalooza in 1993. They were incredible. I feel that they should've headlined over Primus that year. I eagerly waited for them to tour in support of the self titled 1996 CD. They never did.

I'm one of the many pissed individuals who never got to see them live. I have just about everything they've made. Even Layne's side project with madseason. Without a doubt they left a lasting impression as well as influence on the rock scene. "Died" great song. The video for "get born again" just sick. Woulda killed so see what they woulda came out with had layne survived. I'm sure they'd put the bands out there right now to complete shame.

I was in middle school when "Singles" came out, and I played that album nearly non-stop for a good two months. When I finally saw the "Would?" video, Layne looked like the coolest fucking guy in the world, and I had to go throw on a pair of black jeans, my red hooded sweatshirt, slick my hair back, and throw on a pair of big, black wraparound shades. I think I may have also tried to force my chin to grow facial hair that instant, but nothing ever came.
Other than that, I never really could "get into" any of their albums besides "Dirt", but MAN, that was very much MY album for a good year until I turned 14. I loved "Nevermind", but "Dirt" was the one that really, truly spoke to me, and that didn't change until "In Utero" finally lumbered along and swallowed me whole...but pretty much for an entire school year when I was 13, Alice In Chains were the greatest thing I could ever possibly hope to hear. An honestly great album that deserves to last forever.

AIC is an amazing band. I got the box set. It rocks so hard. I love "Queen of the Rodeo." Such a silly silly song.
