AT&T has introduced a new network, Its called GSM. Basically it s part of a new network in which your phone, if it is a next generation GSM phone will work anywhere in the world. However i switched ver a couple weeks ago and the service is horrible due to that this network is still new and wont be fully functional till next year. If you go past Rockland County in NY, chances are you will not have any service. Also these new phones are pricey. I purchased the motorola T720 for 249.99, but it comes with a $100 rebate. If you are thinking about switching to the GSM network save yourself the money and aggravation
Kinda makes you think when the #1 rapper is white and the #1 golfer is black

I got my new phone a few months back and was looking at the GSM phones, the guy in the at&t store told me to wait a few months because the network was very small. I guess that's still the case.

Just like AT&T to give you worldwide service that doesn't work anywhere in the world.

GSM isn't really "new" technology - it's been around forever, and in the rest of the world, it's pretty much all there is. The US has CDMA, TDMA, and GSM - GSM has been in use for a while by a few companies.... don't quote me on it but I think Sprint PCS and Cingular use it. It's just a different standard, that uses a different frequency.
You're talking about the third-generation ("3G") wireless technology. Current 3G is pretty new, and isn't even full 3G. Once 3G is fully rolled out, which won't be for at probably 2 years at least, you'll be able to get broadband speeds on a cell phone. We're talking 2 megabits, which is comparable to, say, a cable modem.
So, you might not want to get it now, but it's going to be huge.

Well the service on my AT&T has been getting more and more worse, so I spoke with a friend of mine who has a GSM phone and he raved about the service. Basically my existing phone is pretty bad some areas, and is very limited in terms of coverage from my home due to a lack of cell towers in the area. So I decided to give GSM a try. I went to the AT&T store and got this cool Sony Ericcson phone and it worked pretty decently at work. I tested it out calling several people, it worked relatively okay until I got home. The phone had not a single bar for connection and eventually said "NO NETWORK" on it. I called AT&T and they tested out the phone and the signal and could not get it work.
I just got back from returning the phone because while the phone was cool, I need to be able to use my phone from home and other places. Under the older network it works so I decided to go back. I was hoping by this time the GSM network would be much better and with more coverage. The woman from AT&T's phone customer service said she made a note of the area for adding a cell tower, and they did the same out of the store location I returned it to. They said to give it a try in a few months again. So we'll see if it's better by then.
