View Full Version : why are women less interested in politics than men?

with all this war stuff going on, it's become incresingly evident to me that women are generally not very interested in politics and current events, where men are. before people jump on me, i'm not saying all women; this board itself is proof that there are some women who take an interest in these things. and, of course, there are men who don't. but, in aggregate, it seems more than obvious to me that there's a gender line here. so... what's it all about? why is a women who is just as intelligent, educated, etc. as a given man just not care about this, where the man would?

Aren't there probably more guys here to begin with? I mean, this IS the internet..oh, you misunderstand me, sir. i'm not just talking about the board; i was simply using it as a ready example. i have found this to be true in my "real life" as well. you might expect women in law school to be more up on their current events than perhaps other women are. you would, of course, be wrong.

Of course, everyone should be interested in politics to some degree but I've found that most women down here are interested in politics.

However, that can be a negative at times since it's a status thing down here: "I work for Senator/Congressman so and so" or "I'm a lobbyist for so and so".

Perhaps it's the lack of female influence in national politics. For the most part the "Ole Boy Network" still exists. While progress has been made over the last half century, the House, Senate, and Governorships are still primarily filled with males.

Or, it could be as Fez says - girls are all ugly and stupid.

but its so F'N amazing that most women know everything about FRIENDS & Will and Grace

Kinda makes you think when the #1 rapper is white and the #1 golfer is black

Perhaps it's the lack of female influence in national politics. For the most part the "Ole Boy Network" still exists. just to play devil's advocate - since i don't know that i really buy this argument - couldn't it be that the lack of female presence in the political arena is the result of their general lack of interest in politics?

With the war, I know a number of women who, after a
while, were avoiding the coverage. It's not because
they weren't interested in politics, but because they
found those instances in which innocent people were
killed to be really upsetting. Whereas many men find
these instances to be sad, but do not get as
emotionally invested. That could account for some of
what you're seeing.

Cuz women are good at avoiding debate, conflict, confrontation, and working out issues. By nature, they prefer to cover up problems and pretend they don't exist until they explode at you about something trivial.

Cuz women are good at avoiding debate, conflict, confrontation, and working out issues. By nature, they prefer to cover up problems and pretend they don't exist until they explode at you about something trivial.wow, that's one of the biggest loads of crap i've ever seen. way to go, dumbass.

first, what you've just said is really not responsive to the question posed. what does conflict and working out issues have to do with the desire to be informed about what's going on in the world?

second, i don't know what rock you're living under, but most women i know are far more likely than men to bring problems out in the open, talk about them, and try to work them out... sometimes, i'd say, there's too much of this. the men that i know are generally much more likely to cover up a problem and not wish to confront it.

third, how does this exploding about something trivial thing help your argument? it couldn't have any less to do with what we're talking about. further, if it's true, it would serve as evidence that women do, in fact, not avoid confrontation and conflict. whether or not you think the thing that's bothering them is important, your argument falls apart.

i'm sure there's a reason you're so bitter, i just don't really care to hear it. oops, look at me avoiding the issue. typical woman, i guess.

this is just myopinion, and i have like 5 minutes to make it before running to a class

basically, i think it really has to do with stereotypical gender roles. boys were taught to work and bring home money and fight in our wars, and girls were taught to take care of the boys. i've actually noticed with my age group ((mostly women right out of high school or in their early college years,)) we've retracted a bit into that stereotypical lifestyle. and perhaps, it may be the reason that boys/men are so interested in war. it appeals to what they unconsciously believe they are a part of, and women unconsciously know to avoid it since they believe it does not apply to them.

but, who knows, i could be wrong.

...why are you all looking at me like that?

I don't think this board is truly representative of society because there are so many more men than women.

Generally, The women I know are MUCH more politically active than the men.

It also seems that alot of women have their opinions formed by other people (not all by any means), especially celebs. If you ask them about the president they say they dont like him. They dont take into consideration the widescale human rights violations in Iraq (Yes there are other areas with human rights violations but doing anything in those areas will bring WWIII) when talking about the war, the seem to believe that the Dixie Chicks know somthing they dont. It just seems sad that people (guys/girls) can have their opinions given to them by someone else.

Gender roles is a fascinating area of study in psychology. Several people have given opinions expressing their awareness of different gender roles.

Generally, men are raised to be agentic - to view their role outside the home. Women are raised to be communal - to view their chief role as home oriented.

Now the object relations of sex basically looks at how early emotional experience and interpersonal relationships (especially with mom) shapes our psyche. Our ideas of sex and sex roles are formed by internalization based on people we deal with and how they relate to us.

Despite the fact that much progress has been made on this front, parents and others treat boy children and girl children differently. (There have been many fascinating, creative experiments to show this, but I won't get into it b/c the explanation would take too long.)

Significant progress has been made by women in terms of being more accepted in the workforce, but they are still more likely to have "caring" professions, such as a therapist or teacher or doctor, than political aspirations. Of course, this is a generalization. There have been many female world leaders such as Margaret Thatcher, who thought in terms of a national or even global direction. In the United States, (which lags far behind most industrial countries in terms of gender equality,) male politicians outnumber female politicians by a large factor, just as male CEO's outnumber female CEO's.

Part of this is based on women having less oportunity to advance than men. Gender Role theorists posit that it has more to do with the gender roles instilled in a child from birth on. A person raised to be a caregiver and to be primarily concerned with internal family affairs is less likely to have political interests than a person raised to go out into the world and take action.

It's been a semester since I taught the psychology of gender roles, and it's one of the most interesting and important ways of understanding relationships b/w men and women, men and men, and women and women.

One of the most important concepts in this field of study is that there are far more differences withing the group of men and within the group of women, than there are b/w men and women. What differences there are (aside from the obvious biological anatomical differences) is a product of their upbringing and their exposure to their gender role filtered through their "cultural lens."

Women are not programmed to be nurturers any more than men are programmed to be breadwinners. It is not a "natural" state of being, but rather a product of indoctrination from birth, when the new baby is assigned a blue or pink hospital card based on gender.
