That's pretty horrible, not funny.

I'm surprised however, that they weren't woken by the smell of smoke. People disabled in one (or more) sense(s) develop their other senses to a much higher level.

Why weren't there sprinklers in the building? Is there no building code in Russia?

I've heard this fact for years, but just recently heard
that it was a myth. Not challenging, Horde King. I'm
just curious, is there any research to back this up?

I haven't read any research on the topic. My evidence is anecdotal, that is it comes from friends and collegues with various disabillites, particularly visual impairments.

It's not that they have a "spider sense" or something similar. It's more like they're much better attuned to the messages received from their remaining senses. It's developed by practice and out of necessity; it doesn't occur automatically.
