No way!

There are two in NJ that I know of and they are always great.. sushi is made fresh just like in a regular joint, but since it's all you can eat you can stuff yourself silly.

I can't possibly fathom how it can be decent sushi, all you can eat, and not be prohibitively expensive. Places like these I think usually are using up the left over odds and ends of fish.

That said, if you like it, go for it. I don't know what the place Billy was talking about is.

The only time I ever got food poisoning was at an all you can eat sushi joint. I thought the gimmick of using rice balls that were three times the normal size (to fill you up so you ate less) was bad enough.

You get what you pay for. I would never go to one of these places again.

I think he was referring to this Chinese/Japanese "all you can eat" place on Rte. 110 in Huntington. Been there... gross. The fattest people in the world walking around with 2 plates each piled high..... *shudder* I will never go there again

You mean the China Grand Buffet by the Walt Whitman mall? I've always wnated to go there :)

I adore really bad chinese food, as long as it is good bad food. I also like really good chinese food. I don't like bad bad chinese food or bad good chinese food though!

(examples: bad bad chinese food = wok 'n roll in malls. good bad chinese food = panda express in malls. bad good chinese food = empire szechuan gourmet in the city. good good chinese food = phoenix garden in the city!)

maybe the bad in good bad chinese food can be substituted with "americanized" get it?

but I still maintain tha all you can eat sushi sounds highly questionable.

Fine.

TooCute.. next time you are anywhere in NJ we can take you out to the awesome all you can eat place in Lincoln Park. Trust me, it will change your opinion of all you can eat sushi.

The stuff is fresh, made when you order, and really good. The selection is pretty good and no one has ever been sick.

Or, just go there with your friends since we are scary internet guys. If you don't like it I will Paypal back the $20 bucks you spent on it, but, I am betting you will like it.

The stuff is fresh, made when you order, and really good.

I sure as hell hope it isn't old raw fish. I'm not really questioning its safeness, though I know several people who have gotten sick at these places. They wouldn't stay open long if they were consistently unsafe. I very much question how good the sushi is.

I'll bet that the sushi is on the same level as those places in the city where it's "half price if you eat in, comes with a free soda!" where the tekkamakis are made with minced tuna and the rolls are more rice than fish. Ick. Kind of like going to Outback for steaks and Dunkin Donuts for bagels.

What kind of sushi do they have (nigiri? temake? sashimi? what type of fish etc.?) and do they have any rules about you have to eat everything on your plate first before you can get more?

Both places have rolls, hand rolls, and nigiri.

The rules are pretty much order what you can eat. You can get as much as you want, as many orders as you want, as long as you finish everything. Otherwise it costs extra to take it home.

As for fish.. all the standard stuff: tuna, salmon, yellowtail, eel, shrimp, salmon skin, etc. They have other specialty rolls but they all cost more.

I may not be a sushi expert, but I do know that everyone I have taken there likes it. And there are always people in there of Asian origin and they eat it all up, so it can't be that bad if the FOBs like it.

Billy's place: Chikuri, on Wantagh ave in Leavittown.

We went there for lunch today. $19.95. My local sushi place which has marginally better quality fish than this place did costs me $16.95 for 10 pieces of sashimi, two appetizers, soup and salad so it's not necessarily a bargain, but that said I ate far more than $19.95 worth of sushi just because I could (8 pieces hamachi nigirisushi, 5 pieces maguro, 2 pieces suzuki, 2 pieces hirami, 1 piece aji, plus I think we split at least ten big rolls between us, maybe more)

My opinions regarding all you can eat sushi still stand. You still couldn't pay me to go to one of those all you can eat sushi buffets.

This place had the standard wide variety of rolls, standard fish but nothing like toro or uni. All you can eat included regular rolls and sushi, but not sashimi (poop. sashimi is where it's at). As I suspected, the fish was about the same quality as you get at those bargain sushi places in the city - absolutely fresh of course, but you know that the tuna isn't coming from the tuna that went for $10,000 a fish and was brought in with minimal fight and tossed on dry ice as soon as its blood was drained. Maybe $5,000 :) All of the fish had good flavor but the tuna and yellowtail were both somewhat less than firm (half the appeal of yellowtail is its texture!), while the striped bass was overly firm and stringy (probably from higher up on the belly of a smaller fish). The spanish mackerel was good - it is a very hghly variable fish - it can be quite fishy or quite mild.
Disappointingly in all cases the rice was warm (?!!! What's up with that??!!!!)

The rolls were interesting; I think every sushi joint has their own rolls. We had several rolls that involved tempura and several that involved mayonnnaise, neither of which I'm a fan of in my sushi, although I know lots of other people are. Other rolls invoved lots of avocado, eel, and various cuts of fish - I enjoyed those much more. Rolls tend to be much much more enjoyable at places like this because they don't rely on the texture of the fish to be good, but rather on creative combinations.

I think the moral of the story is just as I would never go to Nobu specifically to order rolls, I would not go to Chikuri specifically to order sushi. However I'll definitely go back on days when I'm very hungry and in the mood for dragon rolls :)

Well I liked it and was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was going to be a buffet kind of place, but you just ordered whatever sushi or rolls you wanted from the menu and they kept coming. Yes, this place wasn't Nobu or Sushisay, but you get what you pay for.

In addition, it was great having lunch with Billy. Everyone in the place knew him and I got caught up on all things Billy pre my Too Cute days.

I recommend this place to anyone in the area who is hungry and looking for a good value.

Next up, we are going to take Billy for Shabu-Shabu.

As they would say on Iron Chef, the sushi was "more than pleasant."

Chicks kept calling Billy on his cell phone....interesting.....

We gave Billy a bag of roasted green peas with wasabi for the trip to DC. Hope he likes them.

My favorite line from the show was, "The dish is quite masculine."

There is (perhaps was) a sushi place in the Village that had an "all you can eat" option, but they had very strict rules. You couldn't sit more than an hour and a half and if you didn't finish what you ordered you weren't allowed to take it home.

My eyes are always bigger than my stomach when it comes to sushi. I forget how quickly it can fill you up.

And the one time I got food poisoning was after eating sushi. It was a place on 32nd street. The place was packed with mostly Japanese people so I took it as a good sign. Boy was I wrong!

My favorite sushi place in the city is Shabu Shabu on E 70th St. - Their sushi is as good as any I've had anywhere, here or Japan (which gets so much of its fish here, anyway...). Of course their shabu shabu is fun, but shabu shabu isn't as variable from restaurant to restaurant as sushi is. The owner is also the sushi chef. He dressed up in a full body bunny costume and sang to me on my birthday. They totally hooked us up on my birthday; I walked in and didn't even have to order; they said we've got your sushi ready to go, do you want any appetizers? The plate was like entirely chutoro, ootoro and hamachi (they know what I like!!) and almost too rich to eat, but they only charged us $80 for it - nice!! They also have onigoshitaburui sake (the best hiyazake) in smaller than ridiculous sized bottles. I'll take this place over Nobu any day!

I've gone to all you can eat sushi twice in my live, two different places right by me and it has been nothing short of amazing. Not the best sushi I've ever had in my life, but very good and very satisfying.

My favorite line from the show was, "The dish is quite masculine."

And then she goes on to say..."but as I chewed it it tasted more feminine."

(From Battle Stingray - the best battle ever).

They also have onigoshitaburui sake (the best hiyazake)

I never liked sake until I had high quality COLD sake. I love it now.

They totally hooked us up on my birthday:

It helps to drop Too Cute's grandfather's name when making the reservation, worked for me..."

but they only charged us $80 for it - nice!!

I wish I knew that ahead of time..You know that feeling you get when you wonder if your credit card is going to be maxed out or not....

Shabu Shabu is the best....go there.

Minado in Little Ferry is pretty good. (past giants stadium). All you can eat sushi, chicken and beef teriaki, and other japanese stuff. Best to be there early as it's crowded most of the time for lunch and dinner.

I think the place on 110 you might be talking about is "East", also across from the Walt Whitman Mall... I like that place a lot. A little pricey for an AYCE ($21.95 on Fri./Sat. nights) but very worth it. Besides Chinese, the buffet also represents a little Thai, Japanese, Korean, and Mongolian. Plus, there's the sushi (mostly just tuna and salmon), the Korean grill (cooked right in front of you), the carving station with Peking Duck and roast beef, and the good seafood selection and raw bar.
Lots of variety, everything's fresh, and the food's really enjoyable.
