This character had a ton of potential. Danny Spivey was a decent worker in his day, but he struck gold with this gimmick. The whole hand shaking idea was great. Too bad he retired and they scrapped the gimmick. KnowhatImean?

This gimmick has always been a guilty pleasure of mine.

The original gimmick was fantastic - an evil clown, before it became entirely cliche to have evil clown wrestlers, but they went and hired Matt Borne to play him originally - a guy who actually had TALENT. I always loved it when they'd have Doink come out and act like a clown, and then get in the ring and have great technical matches with guys like Curt Henning.

When they turned him face and inserted the midgets, though, it all went downhill fast.

This could have been a decent midcard gimmick if things had worked out decently.

See, now this I totally disagree with, but that's because I'm a fan of shootfights and shoot-style wrestling. This was a good concept, and actually it was Vince trying to do what the Japanese have been trying (with varying degrees of success), which is to incorporate the immensely popular (more so overseas, but still) market of shoot-fighting into his product. The experiment didn't really work so well, but the idea was ahead of it's time anyway. What the Brawl for All did do was two things: 1) Essentially kill Steve Williams North American career, and 2) essentially made Mike Barton's Japanese career.

Put me on the Waylon Mercy bandwagon too, that would have been HUGE. Who doesn't want a wrestling Max Cady. I"m suprised he didn't give the gimmick to another worker, it was so cool. But Spivey was perfect(first time that sequence of words has ever been put together) as Mercy, the aging, balding southern fried scumbag.

And the XFL was a risk, but a good one. There probably still is a market for spring football, their biggest mistake however was not playing a pre-season schedule for these guys to round into shape. I'll never forget, me and my boys went to the bar knowing it wouldn't be the NFL, but WANTING to love it, as I suspect a lot of other people did off the huge opening rating it did. But even a layman could see how poor the actual play was, and it never got back the momentum lost. It's unfortunate too, because by week 8 or 9, when it was on it's way out, those boys were actually playing fun, exciting football. But it was DOA by that point. I do think Stern also had a good suggestoin for the league, in that celebrities should have owned the teams so that they could have feuded more visibily in upper managment. Flawed, but a good high risk/high reward gamble in my book.

I can't believe no one's mentioned the WBF, the World Bodybuilding Federation. Holy christ, Vince will try to convince you he's straight and the genetic jackhammer, after he assembles a totally separate stable of buff boys for him to throw the weights around with. Homoeroticism at his homoeroticiest. Does anyone remember any details of this shit? I do know Luger was involved, but I'd kind of disassociated from wrestling because of bullshit like this. What was the story of this most disgraced side projects?

i agree with this 100%. when Doink first showed up there was something freaky about the guy. his psychotic looks in the clown makeup was cool.

And XFL was a good idea, but they didn't give the players any pre-season games and claimed to make changes to the game, but didn't make any real change except for the coin toss. They should have changed the rules to make it a speed game as opposed to a sloppy NFL game.

Most of the things said in this thread are no all that bad. The Barbershop is the reason Shawn Michaels is anything. I know him kicking Marty Janetty through the glass made him my undisputed favorite wrestler when i was 6 or 7.

The worst gimmick had to have been Ludwig Borga, if only because he ended Tatanka's 3 year win streak for no reason. Tatanka was big time, and then he loses to this guy.

NOTHING, and I mean nothing, tops the sheer comedic GENIUS that was the Big Bossman / Big Show feud. You cannot beat watching a 500 lb. man getting pulled through a graveyard on his own father's casket. Nothing compares.

The worst gimmick had to have been Ludwig Borga, if only because he ended Tatanka's 3 year win streak for no reason. Tatanka was big time, and then he loses to this guy.

Fun fact about Borga: Tony Halme, the real man behind the Borga gimmick, was a legit tough man / fighter, who competed around the world in Europe, and even briefly wrestling in New Japan Pro Wrestling (in the early 90s). Like a lot of former pro wrestlers, he now has a career.....in politics.
