Is anyone here an insurance agent?

If so, would you recommend it as a career? How hard is it to get started? Is it better to go out on your own after you're establised? Most importantly, what's the best way to get started?

i did -- took a 2 week cram class in edison -- ($220) took the test (need a 71 or better to pass) ($25 or 30) then the cost of the lic is $350 -- find a good company to start with, one who doesn't pressure people in to buy'n on the spot. Think you are always helping people rather than make'n $ and you'll do well -- make contacts, work for a co for a yr or 2 and then take your clients and go solo...... Who are you interviewing with?

My co was a scam so i got out -- on a break, might go back was good, felt good when you got someone covered.

i've never sold insurance, but i used to work as an actuary at an insurance company. i'd like to emphasize the words "used to". i used to speak with insurance salespeople on the phone sometimes and stuff... i never really got the impression that they were loving life or anything. in my experience, anything insurance makes for one of the most boring and unfulfilling jobs ever. that all said, there's stability in something like insurance. there will be some training and all, but nothing too super major. to get started, just get your resume out to the various insurance companies... there are about a million. right now the market's rough for anything, but you might as well get yourself on file if nothing else. good luck.

Thanks guys... I'm not interviewing with anyone. I've sent out my resume and inquired a little bit to several companies.

I've briefly talked to a few agents and they're only working like 20 hours a week and making good money. I'm sort of trying to figure out what the hell I'm going to do with my life... while it might not be a job that I love, it could be one that would give me enough free time (once I get established) to love the rest of my life... and walk my dog the required 2-3 hours a day. LOL

Raven, how did you find the insurance class? I've been looking and haven't had any luck. The only thing I've found is being trained by a specific insurance company, which might not be bad.
Thanks for your help

20 hrs a week???? I know i was new but i was working 6 - 7 days and 4-5 days from 10am to 11pm (2 nights were warn calling) once you have a client base you will have to do less because the clients turn over their friends and family to you and you do less cold/warm calling but unless you are bringing in the $$$ the Co will be on your ass to do more -- work till you drop and make them $$$$$
I'm looking for a 50/50 co (50% pay 50% commission) so i can have a more stable income -- stright commission sucks!!!

let me look up my school and i'll send you the info
