We all knew this was going to happen, 9/11 didn't just cost the city heavily in lives...

Makes you all shed a tear for the MTA for holding the city hostage last year, huh?

Blaming Bloomberg for the city's financial problems post 9/11 is asinine

Bloomberg has no choice. By law he is required to balance the city budget. He had to cut something, and he had to cut a lot.

nah, this is Bloomberg's contingency program-- the "red button" you might say. (not to say that he isn't nuts)

This problem runs to Pataki, the NY Senators and Reps, and the Presidency. If the Economy wasn't in the shit, we wouldn't have this problem.

one thing i do like about bloomberg is that he won't back away from an unpopular decision.

one thing i do like about bloomberg is that he won't back away from an unpopular decisionthe only problem is that sometimes decisions are unpopular for good reason. while politicians should be confident in their policies, there really should be some degree of deference paid to "the people". i know that the answer to this is always, "well, if you don't like it, then vote him out of office." however, while that's true, it's really not particularly helpful right now. there's a war going on. there's a constant threat of terrorism. as a new yorker, i'm not thrilled to death at the prosect of there being the lowest number of police officers since 1993 NOW.

But usually not.
People find things unpopular because it adversely effects their lives. Bloomberg didn't go into office looking to cut jobs and programs, he's forced to due to lack of funds. but instead of looking like a good guy and driving the city deeper into debt, he's going to make the unpopular and in the long run, right choice to balance the budget.

At times like this, don't you wish some overly-rich asshole like Bill Gates would just slip the city a couple billion dollars and call it even? It's not like it would even put a dent in his wallet.

Have we ever had a mayor that WAS liked?
Koch? LaGuardia? Dinkins? I know Guiliani went out pretty good but everyone hated him before 9/11.

I'm no fan of Bloomberg...but I think anyone in his situation would be forced to make many of the decisions regarding the NYC economy. 9-11 hit they city hard monetarily and he's the one that is forced to try and rebuild and reconfigure the economy so it evens out in the end.

This is true. It is also true that if Bush came across with 1/2 of the billions he promised NY after 9/11 we wouldn't have this deep a problem.

or if our senators did what they said they'd do, and "get us our fair share."
there are alot of people to blame for this.

Bloomberg has always stated that he will run the city like a business. That's what he's good at, and that's what elected him. By law, he has to balance the budget. Thus, he must make the cuts. Sure, it would help out alot if NYS would give us more of that terrorism money, and if Congress would allocate more to NYS, and if the US government had more money to give to states, but that won't happen.

Sure, it sucks closing firehouses. It sucks pulling police officers. It sucks closing down all city pools for the summer. But the money needs to be spent elsewhere. It needs to be used to balance the budget. Too many agencies in the red, not enough in the black.

It is also true that if Bush came across with 1/2 of the billions he promised NY after 9/11 we wouldn't have this deep a problem.

WTF? Did I wake up one day to find that EVERYTHING in the US is run by The President now?

.... now go ahead and make the smart ass comment about "HEHE, BUSH IS DAS FUERHER!!!! WE LIVE IN NAZI STATE!"

Most of you people are too young to remember that the same thing happened in 1975 under Mayor Beame. Thousands of cops and firemen were laid off at midnight on 6/30/75. I know because I was laid off for 9 months and almost didn't go back when I was recalled. Alot of my friends had found better jobs and just said "Screw NYC".
To place the blame on Bloomberg is just too simple. Sure, I don't like the way he's running the city (It's not a business) and I didn't and won't vote for him in the future, but let's put most of the blame where it belongs- the aftermath of the Attacks and the perrenial broken promises of the politicians in Washington. Sure, it's real easy to say that you're going to help and don't worry about a thing when tempers and emotions are flying but when it's time to put up or shut up, Well- we just got screwed again!!!

Oh yea-one more thing-We can pour literally billions into Iraq and the politicians can wring their hands about how to help the Iraqi government get back on it's feet economically-Well-who's paying for it- we are while our fellow citizens are preparing to lose their jobs and livelihoods-It really SUCKS!!!

i was never good at Simcity, so i'll lay off the mayor. theres a budget to be balanced, and he's good at that. as long as he doesnt spend his days playing tennis and letting a neighborhood burn, thats fine with me.

WTF... it is amazing that the NY congressional/Senatorial decision hasn't done more. I guess this is what happens when most of our congressional delegation is in the minority. also.. there is a senator isn't out for new york but only worried about their future politcal ambitions...

it's not just a certain politician, ALL politicians are concerned with their future political ambitions.
