Does anyone know if there's a website that has transcripts for CSPAN meetings. I'm watching right now a tape from Weds it says showing Repubican Congressmen attack, I believe other Republicans, and the administration over human rights issues in China and to a lesser part Cuba.

You could probably get video off the C-SPAN website (obviously): http://www.c-span.org/

Or, you might want to go to the Congressional committee website: http://foreign.senate.gov/hearings/hrg030409p2.html

and on the House side: http://wwwa.house.gov/international_relations/

I find it amusing when the US berates a nation yet find it ok to make China 'most favorite nation status'. Or to hold Cuba unto tight reigns as if they are a threat to the US. The US fines and prohibits companies, organizations and others who dare help or try and do business with Cuba. The US also still deems Cuba a threat as if the USSR still existed and funded them. Pretty sad indeed.

Making examples of nations as well as hypocritical policies....all in a days work in Congress.

As this committee seems to be discussing, China should be treated just as harshly as they do Cuba.
While I am happy and agree with the majority of administration policies and choices. Their changed attitude towards China is not amongst those.
But I do applaud their stance with Cuba, and can only hope that similar treatment should be extended to countries that act similarly towards their citizens, but know that will never happen no matter which party is in power. But luckily there is a powerful Cuban-American Republican lobby in Florida that will never let it drop until Castro is gone.

What's our trade deficit with China now? I seem to recall that we're dumping about 80 b-b-b-billion into that hellhole every year.

I'm one of the crazy right-wingers who thinks that we should have recognized the Republic of China on Taiwan as the official Chinese government as soon as the mainland thought it would be cute to roll tanks throught Tianemen Square.

The Chinese navy is pretty weak, and the Taiwanese Air Force fairly strong thankfully enacting a stalemate. The only way the Chinese can get to Taiwan is the million man swim.

Actually, the Taiwanese NAVY is fairly strong too as the U.S. sold them retired Perry and Knox-class frigates. Also, they may get AEGIS-capable destroyers.

However, the PRC is looking to improve and modernize its naval capabilities. One of the main goals is to buy or develop an aircraft carrier capability.

But right now the PRC does pose a serious threat to the U.S. with these ships: http://www.newsmax.com/articles/?a=2000/7/12/70602

The Republic of China is a very powerful nation considering their size. The PRC can bark all they want, but when it comes right down to it, the ROC can declare themselves independent and all the mainland can do is shake their fists. Even if the People's Republic was capable of a massive aquatic invasion, which they are not, would they be able to impose Communism or even mild colonialism on Formosa? I highly doubt it. And don't think the United States would stand by twiddling their thumbs. China has too much to lose and too little to gain by invading Taiwan.

That's very true...but on the same hand...you never know the initiative and mindset of a nation is....especially for what the future holds. Do you want to wait around til China has the capabilities to have such military might and prowess? 1 billion people can create a lot of production....
