Jobs for the mentally challenged

I have a career project to do for english and we have to pick a job/career and interview people and write some crazy report. Anyway, I was thinking about what jobs I could see some of my friends and family doing, based on their personality. One of the people I thought of was my cousin, who is mentally challenged. I started to think of where i see 'retarded' people working, and i couldnt think of any places at all where I see 'retarded' people working.
Also, my dad's best friend just had a brain anurism(or however you spell it) and he was released from his job as a plummer because he cant remember things that well anymore. He has to live off disability and unemployment for now.

So, what are common jobs for people with mental disabilities? Do they just make money from unemployment their whole lives?

Where I work we have them checking ID's at the door. What sucks is that they can never remember faces. If I come to work without ID I'm screwed. You try to start a fight with the mentally disabled.

Contact your local Goodwill Industries, they are a major service provider in Harrison, NJ and NYC. They have specific programs for developmentally disabled, on-site employment, and testing and assessment facilities. Additionally, contact your local Department of Labor-Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS) for other information.

MCNABBSHOULDDIE - That's an interesting question with complicated answers.

Firstly, it depends on the degree of retardation. Obviously a person who is mildly retarded will do better than someone who is moderately or severely retarded.

But that's not the entire picture. I knew a person who was moderately to severely retarded who worked in the mail room of Cantor Fitztgerald. Every day, he pushed a cart around delivering interoffice mail to various departments. He was very happy at his job, and his employers treated him well and made numerous accomodations for him. He is one of the people I knew who was killed by the terrorist attack on the WTC.

Most moderately to severely retarded people are not able to function so well, not only b/c they don't have special accomodations, but because few employers are willing to hire them for even the most menial of tasks.

Mildly retarded people work at many jobs. Perhaps you remember the actor "Corky" who had Down's Syndrome. He played a major role on the TV series and his diminished mental capacity seemed to affect him minimally. However, it also made it seem that all mildly retarded people can function at this high level which is simply not the case. It depends on the individual.

Finally it is important to note, that there is a big difference between mental retardation and stupidity. Not all stupid people are mentally retarded, and not all mentally retarded are stupid.
