View Full Version : Bottle Rocket and LOVE

I love this movie. Sure it's an obvious low budget first director effort, but it is so pure and good and lovey. The more I watch it the more I love it. Owen and Luke Wilson. If I had hair I would want Anthony (Luke's) hair in that movie. If I had to fuck a chick named Inez or my kids would die I would fuck Inez.
And the best part might be they have two amazing songs by the seminal band LOVE! If you haven't heard of them, they were awesome and very influential, bridging the gap between The Byrds and The Doors. They are Robert Plant's favorite band!Get the new reissue of their amazing 3rd album, Forever Changes...NOW! Their song "Alone Again, Or" is the one where Anthony goes back to the hotel room and hooks up with Inez.

I love this movie as well. I keep recommending it to people, and they always stare at me blankly. The only bit of recognition I get is if I tell them that it's by the same guys who made Rushmore and the Royal Tenenbaums. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson clearly have developed as film makers and storytellers with those two movies, but Bottle Rocket is still my favorite. It works on a small scale, and its very sweet and very funny. I hope that the rumored Criterion version of the DVD comes out in the near future so I can pitch my movie-only copy.
Incidentally, the short film that Bottle Rocket was based on can be found here: http://www.wilson-brothers.com/luke/multimedia/movie-clips.html#bottle-short
As for music, Wes Anderson does a great job of incorporating music into his movies so that it's more than background, and its not simply a vehicle to sell soundtrack CDs. So many young filmmakers can't figure out how to make music an integral part of the film. Of the current generation of filmmakers, I'd say that no one is better than Wes Anderson and Paul Thomas Anderson (no relation. duh.) at doing this.
Go out of your way to see Bottle Rocket, if you haven't done so already.

Bottle Rocket is an excellent little movie that I come back to and watch each time I see it on. The heist scenes are better than big budget movie with all their fancy special effects.
The love story between Antony and Inez is well done and better than other movies.
Owen Wilson's acting is likewise very good. Overall it's just a fun movie that is so well done it makes it great.

I will have to check the movie out. I think I may have seen it back in the day when I too was high and I believe tripping on either acid or ecstacy. Not sure.
Love, hmmm. I will ignore the fact that it is Robert Plant's favorite becasue Plant is invisible to me. BUT....having their sound inbetween The Doors and The Byrds is very VERY interesting. Now I have a project for the weekend.

Exactly. How great is it in the Royal Tenenbaums in the scene in the tent with the Rolling Stones record and a song plays in the background. And then, just like in real life, there is silence between tracks and then Ruby Tuesday starts.
I'm queer for Bottle Rocket.

And speaking of Rushmore...what about the closing scene when the DJ plays The Faces "Oh La La." Everytime I watch that scene I come the closest i have to crying since 1976.
Now I want a shout out to the Faces and The Small Faces and Ronnie Lane RIP.
Oh La La.

Believe it or not, that's exactly the scene I was thinking of when I posted about how good Wes Anderson is at using music in his movies.

Damn right. It's because that's the closest you'll come to movie perfection, and it's almost too much for our souls to take.
It's a crime that there was never a "Bottle Rocket" soundtrack released...that stayed in print for more than a week!
And as far as Owen ventures off into buddy comedy hell, it'll never for me overshadow his talents as a writer. He's co-written all three of the films, and his style of sly, straight faced, understated comedy comes bursting out with each film. Go ahead and make as many big budgets stinkers as you want, Owen, because it'll leave you the cash to produce more gems with Anderson.
And once you get past the music, you can spend hours trying to absord the visuals in any one of Anderson's scenes...he seems to honestly go the distance to make each scene a living, breathing little world unto itself.
I too, am faggius maximus for "Bottle Rocket".

Kaga, from one of my all-time favorites, this goes out...to YOU...
Listen, listen
Was that a bird call
Or was it a signal
In the middle distance
I think it's Dignan
And he's springing me out...
Out on the lam
We stick to the plan
No room for manouvre
Play by the book
Change how we look
And keep our heads down...
Still waiting for one big score...
On the run from Johnny Law
And this ain't no trip to Cleveland
That's for sure
Once more...encore
My constitution suits this life
Of an outlaw
Racing, racing
We might be fugitives
But nobody's chasing
Out in the clear
It's safe when you're near
Your cool is contagious
Pour one for me
That sweet daiquri
Goes down like a dream
Still waiting for one big score...
On the run from Johnny Law
And this ain't no trip to Cleveland
That's for sure
Our luck may be out
And the money spent
But no-one's gonna touch us
'Cos we're innocent...
Still waiting for one big score...
On the run from Johnny Law
And this ain't no trip to Cleveland
That's for sure
Still waiting for one big score...
On the run from Johnny Law
And this ain't no trip to Cleveland
That's for sure...
