IGN's Top 100 Games of All Time

IGN, which is widely regarded as the fairest and best gaming site on the net is putting together their top 100 list of video games.

So far they've done the first 20 games and will be adding 10 each day until they reach #1.

The games mentioned so far are mostly influential games on Atari and PC.

Mark my words that the #1 spot goes to one of the following:
-Super Metroid
-The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-Super Mario 64
-Tetris

Gonna put all you PS2 and XBOX fanboys in your place. Nintendo is dominant and always will be. Even the PS2/XBOX/PC editors on the site are going to admit it.

I should have looked at this list before replying. They are trying to tell me that Discs of Tron is a better game than Sonic the Hedgehog, Warcraft 2, Kid Icarus, Pitfall, Simcity, F-Zero, and Wolfenstein 3D? WHAT THE FUCK IS DISCS OF TRON!!!??!?!?!?!?!? This is the most goddamned insane list I have ever seen, and they've only done the first 20.

I have always regarded "IGN" as the best gaming site on the net. Let's list 20 games each and see who has the most entries listed in the top ten at the end. The list is in no particular order. My last system was N64 and I never had a playstation so I may get torched here but it will be fun trying. Games that HAVE to make this list are:

Destiny of an Emperor- on of the greatest RPG games ever made and the inspiration for the Romance of the Three Kingdoms/Dynasty Warriors series. Not so great graphics but a great storyline...

Dragon Force- probably one of the more successful of the Sega Saturn gaming platform games. This unique game was an action/RPG which allowed you to tap into various characters and use a variety of army subjects such as dragons, wizards, and ghosts.

Mike Tysons Punch Out- Where would boxing games be today without this popular game? And the end character is STILL one of the hardest end characters to defeat.

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance- One of the best Star Wars piloting games which allows you to run in simulator a variety of craft including the X-Wing, The Tie Defender (Bad ass mofo craft), and the Millenium Falcon. The storyline followed a shipping family who got caught up in the fighting between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. You follow all the events leading up to and including the attack on the second Death Star. Then you were allowed to actually command the mission into the heart of Palpatine's creation.

Command and Conquer- A great gaming system which is an inspiration to many similar games in which you build up an army and various other components to your army.

I just went through 80-100 when I came across "Discs of Tron". I had NO idea the list included arcade games. Please excuse me for breaking my own rule but I have to edit my list. I only saw 80-100 and it had no effect in any way with my list. If anyone has a problem with this please say so, I will understand if I need to be disqualified.

Well I think Pac-Man is a lock for the top 10, for creating the video game craze. Asterioids arcade game probably makes, I think that was the first game of it's kind. Possibly Pong, for being an innovative home platform. Personally, I was thrilled to see them recognize Pitfall with the 100 slot.

Others I'd put on, and bear with me as an old school gamer, I"m not up on most things post Sega Genesis:

Zelda(NES)

Baseball Stars(which was thankfully so well remembered, I would have had it higher on the list though)

GTA 3(given)

Madden (any year, but deserves props for taking football gaming to the next level in 1990, and basically only changing via improved graphics, the perspective has remained.


After Burner(arcade version, still one of the great arcade games that took many dollars from me.)

heres my Top Ten:

1. Chrono Trigger - Simply the best RPG ever made. The fighting system was beyond it's time, the story was competely controlled by you the player, and hows 21 endings sound to you? Ive only seen 7 of them.

2. Half-Life - Its the reason FPS are so big today. It redifined the genre and its impact is still seen today (i.e. Counter Strike)

3. Final Fantasy 7 - Another Redefinition in video games, now RPG's were much more than save the princess and the world.

4. Super Mario 64 - Simply put, best game on the 64.

5. Command and Conquer: Red Alert - Its the reason there was Warcraft 1,2 and 3. Its the reason theres hundreds of clone games like this, and its a classic.

6. GTA: Vice City - Sex sells, so does gratitous violence, armed robbery, insane stunt bonuses, mob bosses, rampages...you get the point.

7. Tony Hawk Pro Skater - Because of this game, being a skateboarder means risking being called a poser. Tony Hawk made the term 50-50 or 900 a household name.

8. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - What needs to be said, its just great.

9. Chrono Cross - Not as good as its brother, Trigger, but it was possibly the best RPG next to FF7. Using a warp system between alternate worlds, it really drew ya into the game.

10. NHL 97 - Number 10 isnt really that big to me, but i picked this one because it was fun to Injure the Great one, Wayne Gretzky, and see him twitch on the ice in a puddle of blood. The games impact? Theres no more blood in the NHL games. =(

Actually, they are playing the '93 version in that movie. The last version with fighting before it reappeared in 1996. I personally think 96 was the best year. Super Mario didnt play at all and still the mofo could score from ANYWHERE in that version.

I consider myself to be one of the best and most knowledgeable Mario gamers around. I've beaten every one every made and they're all spectucular. But the original is not the best. Yes, it's the most innovative and copied game of all time, but that doesn't make it better than the rest.

Super Mario 64, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. 3 were all better games.

Look like they just put the original on top to so they didn't shatter the list with a 3D game.

I realize that NHL '94 was a great game, BUT NO SPORTS GAMES SHOULD GO OVER GTA3!!!!
