Makes you wonder, just a little, why we're spending so much money levelling and re-building middle eastern countries, no? just a little bit?
oh, well...
EDIT: They moved the page. While I look for it, the Jist of the story is that financial advisers want to increase the amount that the US can borrow, because it doesn't have the funds in its budget to pay off it's current debts...
...or something like that, it's been a week since I read it, myself...

Well, President Bashar Assad, that's a nice little country you've got there, with all that.... sand.... and well, more sand... Still, it'd be a shame if someone were to, let's say accidently lead a major millitary strike into it... You wouldn't want to, say, wake up one morning and find your country, "liberated," Would you Bashar? Well, my partner Tony and I have a little business proposition for you....

Broke? Hell we'd be doing good to be just broke. We're deep in debt and the Republicans, following party tradition, are putting us deeper in debt.
They're also making sure that when we pay it, their rich pals will pay less and us regular folk will pay more.

Protection makes it sound to Mafia. Let's just call it "tribute". Other countries paying tribute to our greatness.

Hopefully we can pay off our debt by selling Iraqi oil. Then Bush would have been a brilliant fiscal strategist all along.

Sorry to break the bad news to you buddy, but we won't see a penny of any of that money. That's the income for rebuilding Iraq.
Here's the good news...The US taxpayers get to pay off the deficit....yippy!
See how it works? We pay twice...yah!

check your stats.....the 'rich' pay most of the income taxes in this country.
While its true that high income earners pay the most in income taxes (both in absolute $ and in marginal rates) the best studies I've seen (least biased, most thoroughly researched) show that the total tax burden (income, FICA, sales, real estate, et al.) is roughly equivalent across all income strata @ 18 - 20% of income (wages, benefits, capital gains, interest, dividends, et al).
Americans pay a much lower % of income in taxes than other so-called developed countries. This may or may not be a good thing depending on your thoughts and biases. Since most of the people on this board are pretty young they should pay attention to these issues cuz any increase in the national debt now is coming out of your pocket later on in life.
IMO, we do have the whiniest ruling class of anybody else on the planet, however. If Warren Buffet pays his taxes without complaining so should the rest of 'em.
