View Full Version : I have a weird question

i am not good with words so bare with me if this makes NO sense.
I have an oral fixation. I chew on straws, pens, gum, my finger nails, anything i can get my hands on when my nerves get triggered or whatever triggers that sort of thing. It's like i always need to have something in my mouth to calm me down [pauses for laughter and the obvious sexual jokes]
I work overnights at target. unloading trucks and stocking shelves and all that fun stuff. I haven't been working to my full potential since i got there, for whatever reason that might be. Last night during my first break I bought a pack of gum and when i came back from break I noticed I was working a lot faster, smoother, better.
I was wondering if fullfilling that oral fixation/need/whatever would make that big of a difference in my performence.

It might help your work Amy, what I've heard is good for oral fixations is getting a tongue ring. That always gives you something to play with in your mouth and it might help you out. That's if your parents wouldn't kill you, but it's a thought.

Did you let all the guys know you needed something to chew on? I remember you told me about the extra key you had made for the fitting rooms.

You probably should include your tendency to be fidgety with your hands and such, especially when your mouth is not occupied. Could be related, I guess.
Man oh man, the sexual overtones just get worse....

AMY - Why do you consider this a weird question?
There are many different reasons people want something in their mouths. Here are 4 typical examples.
1. Comfort is obtained when your mouth is occupied. This goes back to the oral stage of psychosexual development and people can unconsciously comfort themselves by goinig back to the pleasure and love experienced as an infant when nursing or drinking a bottle. Later in life, there is a short time when a pacifier could make everything in the world all right - Now it takes at least a pint of Ben and Jerrys.
2. Nervous energy. Chewing, biting nails, etc burns up nervous energy and tension that would otherwise affect you in other ways. Chewing is usually a pretty safe way to dispense with nervous energy, so long as you don't develop TMJ syndrome.
Both the above reasons would allow you to perform better at work, as people work better when they're relaxed and feel safe and loved.
3. Oral sex fantasy/daydream - True "oral fixations" where sexual pleasure is only able to be obtained by orally pleasing others is rare, but it occurs. Perhaps like Linda Lovelace, your clitorus is in the back of your throat. (That was probably well before your time). But also remember that sometimes a bannanna is just a bannana.
4. Sometimes our actions have no discernable cause. There is purpose in all actions, but we don't always know what it is, and sometimes it's something as trivial as a muscular twitch or an itch. As a silly example, there's a reason why some people buy tissues in white boxes and other tissues in off white boxes, even though they're the same tissues. If it's not bothering you, it doesn't pay to invest the time and energy figuring out the cause.

FTL that is one of the reasons I took the job. I need to be kept busy all the time. Like right now i have sweatpants on and I can't stop picking at the lil fuzz thats on it. If i didn't have fuzz, i'd be doing something else. STOP THE MADNESS!!!

#2 - Nervous energy.
Where exactly does it come from? I find myself doing the same thing a lot. I always need to be doing something. Whether it's eating, smoking, typing, cleaning, etc....I have to be doing something.
But, there are times that I can rest. But, I am usually stoned or drunk when that happens.

Nervous energy can come from a general medical condition or as a reaction to some drugs, so it's a good idea to check with your doctor about any specific problem.
Mostly though, nervous energy comes from simple tension of everyday life. We work off this energy a little at a time, so that we don't end up with a full blown panic attack.
In general getting rid of tension is good and it doesn't sound like anything is being done in a maladaptive way. I doubt you have anything to worry about.
Drinking too much, or consuming to many drugs (or worse doing both together) is VERY problematic. At best it's a short term solution to long standing problems. Invariably, it will lead to more problems.
