A question of passing a drug test

I know this question has been brought up before, but it was mostly about pot. My question deals with coke and alcohol.

I have a friend (yes, really; I'm not talking about myself!) who was told yesterday she has to go through random drug testing. She mostly drinks and does a little coke now and then. She's not sure when the drug testing will start (hence, it's random), but it could start as soon as tomorrow. Does anyone know how she can pass the test until everything is out of her system?

Also, how long does coke stay in the body? How long does alcohol? And if you're tested for alcohol, can the test tell how much alcohol was consumed?

coke only stays in your system for like 24 hrs. Tell them to drink lots of water to flush out, but i think they should be ok.

i got kicked out of the Navy and failed a test for a 350K Life Insurance Policy... it took 3 years before i could reapply and obtain...

I can't vouch for all of the info but, having worked at a substance treatment center, it fits pretty well with what I saw. There are always a range of detection times because of the different variables that go into the equation (e.g. age, weight, gender, usage, other prescription drugs taken, herbal taken, etc).

As for detecting amounts of a substance, that can be done but my experience is that we had to specifically request levels (this comes in handy for drugs like pot.....the user quits and they can watch their levels go down over time).

my previous employer ( a big national testing co.) would test all drug screens for those suppliments(like goldseal) automatically. if the person who ordered the drug test wanted to pay extra for the result they would give them out as well.

OK, I'm an expert on this. PM/IM/call me if you want detailed info.

However, your friend is in luck because their drug of choice stays in the system a maximum of 48 hours. So, if they haven't played "darts," in 48 hours it is almost certain they should be fine. Metabolites can be detected in the urine for a maximum of 4 days, so this is the safest time period for a urine test.

Alcohol in urine clears in 7-12 hours.

The screwed up thing is that the most benign drug, pot, can stay in your system for up to four weeks. Since THC is stored in fat, the body does not eliminate it at a steady rate. You can pass one day and fail the next. And this is for urine, hair can be much longer. As a rule of thumb it's best not to smoke pot for 2 weeks if you are a light/occasional user, and at least 4 weeks for a chronic user.

It also matters what sensitivity the drug screening company uses. High security/risk jobs might test at 25, most others at 50, some 100 (25 is most sensitive). Not necessary to go into the science here, but the average employer is looking to make sure a person won't be impaired at work (so if a person can't go 2-4 weeks without smoking up they figure they pot daily.)

An important word on supplements that claim to guarantee you will pass the test:

They may, in fact, give you a negative, but your urine will test for the adulterant OR test dilute and a dilute is a fail. A friend of mine took a piss test for the fire department and his urine tested at the same diluteness as water; he failed.

Everyone concerned with a urine test should also know that your first piss of the day is the most concentrated, so when you do have the test, make sure you've urinated a few times before providing the sample.

What I tell my friends is to avoid the drug for the time period necessary and then test the urine themselves (you can go to a lab and pay yourself or buy a home test kit.) This is for a one shot drug test, like a condition for employment test. For those subject to true random drug tests, you need to know how long it stays in your system and plan accordingly. So for people doing blow, they should do it on Friday nights....


Some lengths of time various drugs can be detected in urine:

Alcohol: 7-12 hours
Amphetamines/speed: 48 hours
Barbiturates short acting (i.e. seconal):24 hours
Barbiturates long acting (i.e. Tuinal):3 weeks
Benzodiezepines (Valium, Xanax, Ativan, Halcion): 3 days.
Cocaine: 6 hours-4 days
Codeine: 48 hours
Heroin: 36-72 hours
Marijuana:3 days-4 weeks (depends on use)
Methadone:3 days
Morphine: 48-72 hours
PCP: 8 days

It's a complicated question to answer b/c different drug tests vary in sensitivity and material sampled. As mentioned above, hair retains evidence of drug use far longer than urine or blood.

Chronic users of many drugs take a longer time to flush the drugs out of their system than recreational users.

This is pretty funny. I was looking up some substance abuse programs for a client and came accross one where they basically said that they take all clients, mandated, voluntary, all types of abuses, EXCEPT people actively using heroin. Oddly enough they have no problem with accpeting crack users for example, but those heroin users must be kept away! Isn't that silly?
