View Full Version : RANDOM HAMSTER MUSINGS

We got a female hamster.
I named her Gamera. Too Cute called her Hammie.
Gamera escaped.
We bought a replacement female hamster.
Too Cute named her Hammie as well. The first one was much better. More friendly. This one was little.
Gamera came back. I found her visiting the cage.
So we put her in the cage and added more space to it. Two female hammies. I named the other one Rodan.
Rodan grew balls. Rodan was not a girl hammie. Too Cute renamed her (him) Hammie Hammerton.
Now we have 9 new hammies. They have a 16 day gestation period.
They are very cute. In a week they went from little pinkies to little tiny hairy hamettes.
Other hamster things I've learned:
Hamsters are originally from Syria.
They are obsessed with wheels.
Hamsters love tofu.
A male hamster is called a buck.
Male hamsters have huge balls.
A female hamster is called a doe.
A baby hammie is called a pup.
A group of hamsters is called a horde.
If anyone wants a hamster, let us know in a few weeks.

I'll take one. I don't need a cage though, I'll just wear it out.

So "Willard" is based on HK's life, right?

Too Cute and I had a little conversation on another
thread a few days ago about hamsters because we
lost ours about a month ago and she wanted to UPS
me one of y'all's.
Well guess who was found today, a month later, still
alive and well, and living off various foodstuffs that the
rugrats have been spilling around the TV? No wonder I
wasn't having to vacuum the popcorn up lately.
We still haven't gotten Baby Shu Shu to come back to
the cage, he/she was always extremely shy. But I am
relieved to know the thing is alive. I was expecting the
stench to start any day now. Shu Shu now has a huge
platter of food and water and if she wants to live in the
wilds behind the entertainment center, so be it.

With the kids spending more time with the dog, our hamster days are behind us (no pun intended).
A good solution to an overabundance of hamsters is (1) sex them early and keep the males and females in separate cages (2) get a snake.

Hamster's are such fascinating little animals. If it were not for my hamster Pelle getting out of her cage back in the day, I would have never discovered by Dad's stash and valuable collection of early 70's era Playboys, Penthouse and Oui. Why does EVERYTHING go back to porn with me?
Anyway, Pelle was soon found and then died. Then I got another female, Hezekiah and she lived for 3 1/2 years. She had two full litters and I made the little ids very good homes. I had the damn Habitrail all over and twiting and turning everywhere. it was really cool to see the little guys literally go all over my room. The rest all died and many got flushed and some got buried but hez stayed with me for a long time until her death. After her 3rd birthday I got her tattooed on my left calf becasue she was such a great pet.
I want another one. Are these pedigree hamsters or just the regular teddy bears?
If anyone can help though....I am still on a quest for another African Pigmy Hedgehog. Anyone know any breeders or pet stores that sell them. That was an awesome pet as well.

(2) get a snake.
We already have a snake, named "Kaga."
She likes rabbits and guinea pigs. Hammies are too cute and little for Kaga.

1. I would like to point out that I knew that Hammie Hammerton was a male. I've sexed hundreds of mice in my life. Hamsters aren't all that different.
2. Snipe: try putting out a bucket with a staircase of books up to it and some peanutbutter inside to see if you can lure baby shu shu into it overnight.
3. I will post pictures of the babies somewhere soon. Their parents are both short-hair golden syrian hamsters. The babies so far look like they will all be goldens also, but slightly darker perhaps. They are nibbling on solid food, and starting to explore a bit, though their eyes aren't open yet.

Thanks for the advice, Too Cute. I will definitely try
that. Never thought of peanut butter. Right now all
I've got is a platter of food and a water dish in a corner
of the room with the open cage nearby -- I know she
misses that wheel...
Last night she destroyed a shirt and a sock that were
laying on the floor. That shirt looks like a damn bobcat
was trying to eat it.

I had a hampster once. It ate it's own poop, then escaped and died somewhere.
Poor little bastard.

I had taken Too Cute's advice and I'm sure it would
have worked, but something else happened. 3:00am,
the phone rang and woke me up. Didn't make it to the
phone on time, but figured I was awake for the day
and came into my little Mac Cave. Not five minutes later
I hear the pitter-patter of little feet walking across the
strewn papers and other assorted mess (this is the
room in which I'm still allowed to be a slob). It took a
few minutes, but I managed to capture a very skinny
Baby Shu Shu and get her back into her cage. She
drank water for about 10 solid minutes. I think she's
going to be okay.
