Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone (although it is also present in women). It is produced in the testes and regulated by the pituitary gland in the brain.

I'm sure you already know, that peak production of testosterone peaks around age 21-23 and declines over the rest of our lives.

The information contained in several commercials airing recently is incorrect. Not everyone needs more testosterone. Merely taking testosterone (injection or androgel) will not make you into an 18 year old stud "servicing" all the women in the office. It will not increase your sex drive.

It can however produce unpleasant or harmful side effects.

If there is any question as to whether your testosterone level is too low, see your internist, who will do a blood test to determine the level of testosterone present. On occasion, insufficient testosterone can be responsible for mood disorders.

When testosterone abnormalities are detected, a CT scan of the brain (pituitary gland in particular) is usually ordered.

If you're looking specifically at "adroplex 700" side effects include breast enlargement in males and testicle shrinkage. It can also cause infertility, acne, increased hair growth (as well as loss of hair in some people). It has been linked to increased risk of prostate cancer which is the number two killer of young men.

If you question your testosterone level, see your doctor. I'd avoid taking testosterone supplements or any steroid if humanely possible.
