Well, here's finally something I can say I agree with Bush on, and I am impressed he is standing up to the NRA, one of his biggest supporters.

I agree with Bush on this one.

I am all for the right to bear arms, but NOT for the right to bear an arm that can take out a crowd of dozens in a few minutes. Hunting and protection are different then having a gun like that sitting around until their mountian man ass snaps.

But I know what people are saying. "If the government decides today to limit THIS gun right, what is to say they won't ban ALL guns tomorrow. We're slowly giving away our rights."

I agree this is a scary scenario, but sounds more like a "conspiracy theory", and I hate that type of thinking. The government is NOT out to get you.

Way to go, Bush! Maybe that badass trip to the carrier gave him some balls...

I'm with Moe. You want to own handguns and hunting rifles? Go ahead...but assault weapons, machine guns, the BIG stuff...why is it such a bitch to get these banned from the hands of private citizens? It's not a goddman third world country...you do NOT need them! Plus, you ban these things, it'll give us a bigger target to go after if we ever crack down on these friggin' militia hate groups we have crawling around the south and midwest...

Bush has been showing off the ballies quite a bit recently.

He's been telling the fundies to fuck off, now that they're bitching cause he isn't supporting Santorum.

This topic reminds me of something that happened the other day. My history professor was wearing a golf shirt on Monday when he made this awful joke: "So, what ammendment gives me the right to wear this shirt? The second one- the right to bare arms! " The entire class just silently stared at him except me as I was the only one laughing hysterically because a.) i like bad jokes and b.) I'm an acid-riddled banana.

The legal term for an assault weapon is very blurred.
Everyone has in their mind an image of some badass M60 as one, but it's not really very specific.

It basically says like "if the gun holds X amount of bullets, it's an assault weapon."

LiquidCourage

Oh but anyway, I don't think this has anything to with balls or anything like that. It's that election time is in 18 months and Bush wants to tackle a big left wing issue to build his voting base.

By going against his own voter base? That's not right. He's doing the correct thing by pressing for these weapons to be controlled. According to the news 61% of the country thinks he will be re-elected, so I don't think he would be courting the Left with such an explosive issue for the NRA & ultra-Right.

Sure, and if the ATF shows up on my lawn with assault weapons drawn, and lots of helicopters, I'll gladly go peacefully...

Those people in Waco were wackos, but the gov't also knew Koresh went to the K-Mart at least once a week.

That HBO special i saw on it was pretty scary. They had a guy from the ATF saying the helicopters were not firing on anybody, then they showed video footage of a helicopter swooping down on this guy on a tower and obviously shooting him...

But you're right Moe, I don't think the gov't is out to get me, they want my tax $$ too bad..

Why preach to the choir? If I've learned anything from this forum, it's that if you consider yourself a Conservative, Bush can do no wrong in your eyes, and you will still vote for him while he rapes your mother while pouring sugar in your gas tank. He needs to add votes from the center, and appealing to left wingers by supporting gun control is a way to do it. It's a smart move...

I'm not sure about the legality of this or anything, but could someone have legitimately taken the US Goverment to court for murder? or at least the head of the ATF?

It doesn't come on much anymore, but if that special about Waco comes on HBO again, I highly suggest you watch it...

but could someone have legitimately taken the US Goverment to court for murder?

I am certainly not an expert on this, but I thought I heard that because they ruled the fire an accident (CS Gas ignited by the church's oil lamps) no one could be held responsible for negligence, least of all murder. I think the ATF could easily have waited them out, but seriously blew it. Lesson learned, but a huge unnecessary price to pay for it.

The funny thing about Waco is that it actually took Janet Reno longer to take down the Branch Davidian compound than it did for George W. Bush to take down all of Iraq, and he did it with a much lower civilian casualty rate.

I wanted to briefly respond to Snoogan's response here.

With the attitude "It doesn't matter if a certian gun is illegal if you can still get it", then why not make murder legal because people get away with it. Why not let Crack be legal because there's people dealing it we can't catch.

Laws are not perfect, but they're our "perfect Model" of society so to speak. We try to enforce them, and hope everyone else abides by them. And they also tell people that we will make your life a lot harder if you wish to do things or posess things that are illegal.

Balls... How soon we all forget. The day after September 11th The President called for a Mass... Not a bombing. Now that's balls- to make them wait before we opened up a can of Whop Ass on them. Plus We didn't level Afghanistan either, we simply annihilated the Taliban. Balls is one thing this President has in abundance.

BTW- Assault rifles are bad Its tough to get venison out of a dear with 40 slugs in it.

I don't think so. Was there much risk involved in invading Afghanistan and Iraq? The final outcome of both conflicts was never in question. He had just about full support for Afghanistan, and he had support from the majority of the public and his voter base for Iraq.

This article is about something Bush has rarely done, standing up against some of his biggest supporters and a lot of his voter base. It a big risk, especially considering his standing in the next election. He is way ahead of Democratic candidates. If he ignored this issue, it wouldn't have affected anything. It may not matter in the end and the assualt ban might expire, but at least he said something, which he rarely does.

JerryTaker was right - just some smoke and mirrors to steal some of the left's thunder. 100% no balls. The conservatives, even the far right, are going no-where - they are Bush's bitches.

BTW - according to a friend that's been over there and just returned, as bad as Iraq is right now, Afghanistan is still much more dangerous. He actually expects to return within a year, but not to either of those lovely destinations - forget about Syria and Saudi Arabia too; the scuddle right now is all about Iran.

Well, I'm DOD as well, so now what?
The US is looking to maintain a "wait-and-see" policy towards Iran. The youth population is strongly pro-US and eventually Iran will probably make some pretty big changes for Democracy and reform. We aren't looking to tackle Iran yet as a target.

Howard Kurtz does a good job (in my opinion) of covering the media that
covers politics. Here's the beginning of today's:

Not much, apparently.

Which suggests that he's just trying to grab a
little political credit without crossing his NRA allies. House leaders, in
fact - those would be the leaders of the president's own party - are even
threatening not to call up the measure for a vote.

Excuse us: Is this the same GOP that is whining

Hey, I'm practically a liberal, but I actually like Bush. He seems like a decent guy...I just wouldn't vote for him (Unless something drastic swings him my way) and I disagree with a lot of the decisions he and his party makes, but not all of them, and I think it's retarded and a waste of MY time to have some sort of vendetta against this president, or ANY president. You don't like him, don't vote for him. Boom, bang, done. Simple. Right?
