Its not necessarily a pop up, but for some reason everytime i go to a website this thing pops up and says:
"You are downloading the file:
US from sa.payment.aol.com"
Then it gives me options to open it, save it, cancel it, or more info. I always click cancel but the damn thing pops up everytime i go to any website. I dont wanna d/l it either cause its probably some shit thing thatll just funk up my computer.
if anyone knows what im talking about, how do i get rid of this thing?

You need to install 2 programs on your computer. The first essential program is called Spybot Search and Destroy. It will search out all the spyware on your computer, let you remove them, and innoculate against further known spyware. It's updated fairly frequently and is much more effective than Ad-Aware. The program is free but they ask for a donation. You can download and use it w/o paying a cent.
You can find download sites here http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
The second essential download is called pop-up Stopper and works for both pop up and pop under windows. It's another free download and available at http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html

I have been having a problem with these windows messenger pop ups that appear and once you click out of them, another one appears in its place. It is very aggressive and according to my system processes, it can not be deleted because it is an integral function of XP. Will the prior suggestion solve this problem or do you have another solution? Thank you Horde King!

Hey Vintense,
Just get a free firewall like sygate http://soho.sygate.com/products/shield_ov.htm sygate is free for the "personal" version. I've heard good things about zonealarm too, but personally I've only used sygate.
Sygate Works wonders for messenger windows, it will ask you every time something or someone tries to access your computer, and you can have it block or grant access (and it will remember your choice for next time, so it wont have to ask you again)
Peace & Hugs,

Please allow me to be brutally honest. More than half these people are lucky if they can turn their computer on. Asking them to run a firewall is a ridiculous suggestion. Vint, if the pop-ups that you are experiencing say Messenger Service on them, then they are part of XP and CAN be disabled. http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/

JiZ,
I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, and if some one asks for help with something, if I can, I give the help.
Also, personal firewals are very user friendly and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to run them.
If anyone installs a firewall and has trouble running it, there are two clear options: 1. Ask for additional help or 2. Uninstall it.
Peace & Hugs.

and is much more effective than Ad-Aware.
i ran AdAware on 3 seperate computers and heard that after running it you may experience a problem with Kazaa... it turns out on only one of the pc's I lost Internet Explorer functionality but the other 2 were not affected, Kazza or IE.
I kept getting a "DNS Not Found" type message, or "Server Not Found" related message... I ran a "repair IE" to no avail.
I had to network over to another pc and run the KMD(Kazaa) install again on the pc having the problem... that gave me back IE...
What The?

I prefer Zonealarm to other firewalls, but anything is better than nothing. Black Ice is supposed to be good too. I know that Zonealarm is free.
FUNKMAN - Ad aware removes a piece of spyware that is necessary to run Kaza. It does the same on the latest version (6.1?). You have to reinstall kaaza to get it to run again. If you continue to use Adaware, set this particular piece of spyware on the "Exclude" list.
Better yet, download Kaaza Lite 2 which is also free and doesn't contain the spyware. Adaware still picks up the replacement file as spyware (even though it's blank).
Spyblaster, has no problem with this (it desn't recognize it as spyware). It will also find a TON more spyware than Adaware.
No matter which program you use back up or quarantine the removed spyware files until you're sure they don't affect some part of your system.
VINTENSE - Pop up stopper will block not just windows messaging, but all other known types of pop ups as well.

Thanks for giving me the clues I needed to get my XP to "find the URL". After deleating Ad aware, installing spy bot and restarting, all those "lost google search images" were found. Good times.

i take it the pop-up stopper isn't need, because i had that problem in the past. Definately get spybot: search and destroy. its totally worth it. and if you use a file sharing program like Kazaa d/l Kazaa Lite (it has no spyware) because SPybot will eliminate the file in Kazaa that makes it work because it is spyware

This stopped it for me.
Stopping Messanger Popups
Start -> Run services.msc
Right Click Messanger and select properties
Click Disable then OK.

Is there anything to get rid of pop-ups on a Mac? I'm
still running OS 9.1 most of the time, but will eventually
want to know what to use under OS X, too.

I would also suggest that Opera, a freeware browser for most all computing platforms including Macs, that includes a popup blocker as well as several other features.

I don't understand why this would happen. I have these programs on my 3 computers at home, as well as the 5 computers at work and never get a smilar message.
I suspect it's more of an issue with a firewall than these programs.
In the unlikely event that the programs are the source of the difficulty, try to uninstall them and see if that clears up the problem. If it doesn't, use system restore to bring your registry back to the time before you installed these programs.

A firewall cannot prevent these pop-ups, unless you get one with an additional pop-up stopper. I use zone alarm, along with my router.

Firewalls don't prevent pop-ups (unlessed designed to do so, and even then, the stand alone products work better in my opinion), but firewalls can prevent you from accessing a site.
