View Full Version : Why all the peace overtures all of a sudden?

Looking at the news tonight, I noticed there are is a lot of movement towards peace in the world suddenly. North Korea is calming its rhetoric a bit and wanting to talk more. Pakistan and India are making large strides to normalize and move away from the brink of conflict, even offering to get rid of nuclear weapons. Israel's PM calls the new Palestinian PM a "partner for peace" and asks to resume peace talks with Syria. This is all fairly sudden and, if it continues even at this early stage looks very promising. My question to you all is: how much of all this is a result of the US's policy/victory in Iraq? Is it just coincidence that it's all happening right now or is it something more, possibly stemming from the US's newfound "robust" foreign policy?

The India/Pakistan thing probably isn't affected by us. We aren't threatening either of them. The Israel/Palestine thing is being help by Arafat being out of the equation.
But North Korea. I did think they were backing down, but then I read this:http://www.msnbc.com/news/850567.asp
EDIT:Just to clarify:North Korea told U.S. officials last month that it had two nuclear weapons and would "demonstrate their power by any possible means,"
Yikes.

Settle down.
They're not doing anything.
It's all talk.
Settle down.
They're not doing anything.
It's all talk.
So what is the rule? If a nation is keeping quiet, doing nothing, and cooperating with weapons inspections, they are a threat, but if they are dishing out threats, developing nukes, and throwing out UN officials, don't worry and leave them alone?

It sounds stupid, but that's actually closer to the truth than you think.
We'd really have to worry if they were off making nukes, denying it, yet building launchers facing us.
