Remember this old bastard? Strom Thurmond, a Republican Senator from I believe South Carolina:

He ran for election in the 50's or 60's as a SEGREGATIONIST!!!! That means he was PRO segregating blacks and whites.

Also, current Democratic Senator hailing from the great state of West Virgina Robert Byrd:

He used to be a KKK member! That means he was in an organization that participates in voilence against practically everyone who's not white. Openly hateful organization here people. You know the damage these toothless masses can cause, as long as NASCAR isn't on.

Now I'm NOT suggesting that every American citizen should not have the right to run for public office. Far from it.

I AM suggesting that there is still a lot of ground to cover in America if these men can make it into high ranking offices.

I guess it has to do with the respective staes those two Senators hail from, South Carolina (No shocker there) and West Virginia. While I wouldn't neccessarily call the people there racist, I just think they don't care enough about the issue.

And I remember a Daily Show from around election time where they showed a campaign commercial for the Democratic candidate from South Carolina. It had some old guy talking about how he has guns because "my daddy and my daddies daddy had guns." He then took the shotgun he was holding and took a couple shots into the air.

That's just South Carolina.

EDIT: As for another example, I believe that Al Gore's father was a vocal opponent of civil rigths reform.

well, lets just hope the people who hate minorities are in the minority. in a strange way, i'd prefer if people in power let us know whether or not they're racist. still, it doesnt put the voting public of South Carolina and West Virginia in a flattering light.

And as far as why they got elected, i cant really say anything more than whats been said.


But I'll say it anyway. They got elected a) because they are form places where many share their views and b) because most people dont do too much research on candidates policy or beliefs. They show up on election day and vote for whomever they've heard more about

I just brought this same thing up in another thread, Moe, and my question was more towards why don't the parties of these men move AWAY from them...people may change, but your past is ALWAYS there, and something like this will ALWAYS come back to haunt and damge you and your party whenever you try to do ANYthing...I'm sorry, but if paying for these kind of stupid mistakes in your past means not having the support of your party, they chose that a long, long time ago. They need to go.

That's a very good point too. I hadn't even considered that.

These people's past sully the entire reputation of a party that supports them.

Oh well. All I can really do is make sure I never vote for someone like that in my state.

i agree that it shouldn't happen but there will never be a way to tell....when we choose to elect people its almost like we are hiring someone to work for us....we look at what they've done(resume), people that sponsor them (references), and then judge them based on a series of debates/speeches (interview) then we compare and vote for one (hiring)

you and i both know that when we've gone for jobs in the past not once did any of us mention any negative characteristics...like posting at 5 am on a sunday nite/marnin on a messageboard that is centered around a radio station that you can no longer listen to
