i received an email about it from someone i know today about signing a petition to save her life. the execution is set for june 3.

this whole thing absolutely disgusts me. first, it's insane to put anyone to death for having a child out of wedlock.

what's even worse, though, is that the man who impregnated her was released because of "insufficient evidence". apparently, in order for him to be found guilty, he either needs to confess, or there has to be four witnesses to the adultery. yet the woman is going to be buried and stoned to death. sounds fair to me.

Seriously, though, This just shows how pointless our dumping money into these barbaric countries is. When a country is still using stoning as a punishment, you can't expect to get them to install a good healthcare system. Hell, <I>we</I> can't even get that right...

Although I'm a big fan of Amnesty International (and of Arienette's posts) this may be a situation where the international pressure may be counter-productive. The NY Times had a story in Sunday's paper* where the woman's lawyers said all of the international pressure was creating a more immediate problem.

For those of you too lazy to click, the story is that the case is still in the equivalent of State court over there (where Muslim religious law is enforced) but the process will lead to a federal court where, in the opinion of the women's lawyers, the sentence will be overturned. The lawyers are afraid that all the international pressure may encourage some Nigerian (whatever the African equivalent of a redneck is) to take the Sharia into their own meathooks and have an unauthorized stoning to give a big UP YOURS to the meddling infidels.

Damn, real life is complicated.
