no, It won't... what happens is when your computer writes to your hard drive, it writes in a line, so to speak. picture a badly written paper, where you have written the paper, but want to add a sentence, so you write it at the end of the paper and draw an arrow to where it should go... ( I hope that makes sense)
Your computer does this <I>constantly</I> especailly when you have a lot of programs running at once. what happens eventually is your computer has to follow so many arrows to read all its files, it starts slowing down...
Defrag is the equivelent of your computer re-writing that paper from scratch... It finds where all the loos peices of files are and re-writes them onto the hard drive so that it's all in one place, got it?
the point being, if you or any program writes to the disk at all, you add another arrow to your nice final draft, and your computer has to start the process all over again, that's why you go to 0% over and over....
do what ADF said. You can't hurt your computer being in safe mode (hence it being called "Safe" mode) and it won't load any of those spy and sniffer programs that you probably have all over your hard drive that keep writing to it... then LEAVE YOUR COMPUTER ALONE!!! go outside, read a book, get some air, man!!! come back later and it should have worked...
and run scandisk, too... not at the same time...
