This story infuriated me to no end:http://www.msnbc.com/news/914260.asp?0cv=CB20

What a fucking scumbag that cunt of a mayor is. I guess I better start adding a two-car garage to my house, seeing as it is such a "blight."

They are being offered 35.5 million for 40 homes, thats almost a million a piece for what is probably worth 125,000 at best. What are they whining about?? the community - - many thousands of people will benefit from the growth.
Wouldnt you be pissed off - if in your town they thought to build a "fill in the blank" and they offered a few people a million to move and they stubornly didnt?

If its stealing, rob ME!! i can use a million bucks.

They were offered 35.5 million in "public financing" AKA loans. They aren't even getting paid for their houses.

But that isn't the point. If they want to turn down that offer, they should be free to. Isn't this "The land of the free"? It certainly isn't "The land of the free unless we want to build a Wal-Mart where your house is"

Not only that, even if they were being paid that amount of money, I don't want my tax dollars to be used to pay insane amounts of money so some huge store can come in and reap huge profits. Let the stores pay for it.

There is so much wrong with this. This town and its bitch of a mayor is raping the intent of property seizure laws so they can make some cash. Absolutely fucking pathetic, and unfortuantely not surprising.

I remember when the same thing happened in Cheshire, CT about 20 years ago. Family farmers were paid off/forced out when the state wanted to build Route 691 which connects I-84 and I-91.

the twist on this, aj, is that they're tkaing it not for public use, put for private enterprise. It seems like an updated plot to every western i've ever seen, except its not a railroad going through

You're right but the reasons are the same: "it'll bring business, money, etc."

They aren't even getting paid for their houses.

What a ridiculous statement. By law when real estate is condemned the owner is payed market value. Unfortunately that number is subject to interpretation.

Not only that, even if they were being paid that amount of money, I don't want my tax dollars to be used to pay insane amounts of money so some huge store can come in and reap huge profits. Let the stores pay for it.

This land isn`t being given to the store. It is sold to real estate developers who page hugh sums of money to the county. Your tax dollars are not paying for this because they will make a nice profit. The realtor than charges hugh sums of rent to this store that you despise that god forbid makes a profit. And it would be nice for some stores to make a profit for a change instead of going bankrupt because that would help the economy .

So nobody is getting screwed. The only issue here is the morality of forcing people to relocate from land they own. That is a tough one because there are many arguments on both sides.

The article said that the home owners were owed "just compensation" and that they were being offered "public financing." Maybe the article is wrong, but if it is accurate, they are only being offered loans.

But you are right, the biggest issue is the morality of it all. But in this case I see no justification for the land seizure. This isn't being done so they can build a new road or a hospital or a school or other vital services. This is being done simply so the town can have more tax revenue. What is next? Seizing land from low income earners so they can build upscale housing? That would increase tax revenue too.

Let me ask you something. Don't you see some corruption here? The stores usually go straight to the homeowner to buy the land. Usually the store is the one who offers the homeowners huge amounts of money for their land. In the past, if the homeowner said no, the store was screwed and had to look elsewhere. Now, they can just go to the town and have them take the land from the homeowner, and have the town dictate the price of the land to the owner.

The article probably just isn`t clear. I work in real estate and confirmed with the Principals here that would be illegal. As far as the morality, we don`t know all the particulars. Unfortunately, municipalities commonly use condemnation procedings for all types of projects such as rezonings and capital projects. Hopefully they are doing this for the good of the community and there was some sort of vote. Unfortunately this is not always the case. Obviously corruption does exist in politics. I guess we don`t really know unless we know all the particulars. It could probably fall either way and people are always going to Bitch whichever way it falls.
