If an elevator is at the top floor of a building and its elevator cables snap and the elevator is falling all the way to the basement of the building and someone on the elevator jumps up right before the elevator hits the ground, does the person not get hurt at all? Or is it even possible for him to jump because of gravity?

The very idea that you get at all hurt or killed from this is a myth. I've done this numerous times without so much as a nick or scratch. Aside from a little blood in the urine I've been no worse for the wear from those experiences.
Actually though I don't believe it's possible when terminal velocity is involved...which I think the elevator would reach very quickly as it falls. It does come down to physics and I just don't think it's possible.

I believe it is another urban myth.. just like the 1 from 9/11, the guy said that he fell with tower 1 & only broke a leg.. Later it was proven untrue.

I know this helps no one, but elevators have had very strong, reliable emergency brakes for decades.
I can't remember the company name, but one of the 1st elevator companies was made famous by putting an elephant on an elevator, then cutting the cable. The brakes held up the elephant, obviously.

EXACTLY! If an oversized elevator can be safely stopped, imagine how easy it is to keep your small passenger elevator in the air.

ok, if an elevator is falling I'd think youd hit the ceiling of it as opposed to not being able to jump atall.
Mad props to Fluff for the sig and C.O.soup for hosting!

Yes, he is hung like a horse. One female porn star describes having sex with Johneewadd as like giving birth.

"Everything is relative, said the speeding tortoise to the snail."
Even if you were able to jump, you're still falling from the height where the cable broke. The jump would just delay impact by a fraction of a second, relative to the elevator.
You're falling at the same rate as the elevator relative to the cold, hard, unforgiving floor.

although it is "technically" possible, you'd need to jump upwards with enough force to cancel out the downward fall - unless you're superman or a grasshopper, you'd never be able to generate enough thrust to do it, if the elevator fell more than a foot or 2.

ahahaha
the big prob is that you may jump but you would still need to generate enough power to
1) break away from the current velocity you acumulated while traveling down in the elevator initialy- could rech speds of up to 55 mpr depending on how hi not sure th rate of fall vs gravity I know it is on a curve.
2) time it so you did not hit the elevator before it hit the ground because if you did you would end up going back to your rate of fall.
so if the emergancy breaks failed and this synario would happen the likely hood of you being able to acoplish this (getting timing and enough power in you legs) to do it....
