View Full Version : Why, Big Ass, Does fresh cat pee smell better than old cat pee?

My cat had an accident in my truck the other day. He got nervous and peed in the truck. I got some on my hand and smelled it. It smelled sweet and really not all that offensive. Now it's a few days later and my truck smells like an old litterbox. What happened in the last few days to make it smell worse? Is it the same with human pee?

Well, DJEvelEd, a cat's digestive system is smaller and less complex than a human's. As a result, there are less bi-products that interfere with the waste a cat excretes; giving it a purer and fresher smell.

1. You wrote that you smelled the pee on your hand and that smelled sweet. You didn't say what the truck smelled like.
2. Obviously, pee that has stood w/o being cleaned will smell worse than fresh pee. Consider how your pee smells when you urinate. Now consider the way the back of some buildings smell - in areas where there are few public bathrooms.
3. Long standing pee smells worse.

Not only that, but why the piss wasn't cleaned out of the truck immediatly.

Old cat piss smells bad because it breaks down into ammonia. Like what some people use to clean their floors (ammonia not cat piss)

OK, To make a long story longer...
I don't like taking my cats in the car but I'm moving to Bayonne. I've been trying to acclamate(sp) my 2 cats to the new apartment. I have to drive up the turnpike from New Brunswick and it is very stressful for them. That day, an hour before, my side window fell out of my truck and shattered. My cats were in the car when this happened so there was nothing I could do until I stopped. Well as I'm driving, I lose sight of "Curly". I thought he jumped out the window and started screaming frantically for him, tossing blankets and clothes in the back seat. Well it turns out that Curly was hidden in a pile of clothes and was totally freaked out by me screaming (and the ride itself). He let go all over my clothes and my blankets because he was not used to me yelling for him like that. (My other cat "Buckwheat" was a little angel who could care less about the ride, the pee, or the frantic screaming)
Needless to say, I will keep them safe in Bayonne and limit their commuting on the highways.
And I washed the truck yesterday...
