I went to my nephew's 1st communion on Sunday, and learned one difference. Catholics apparently believe that the bread and wine is or at least becomes the body and blood of Christ, whereas Protestants see the bread/wine as a symbol.

Catholics apparently believe that the bread and wine is or at least becomes the body and blood of Christ, whereas Protestants see the bread/wine as a symbol.
That was a major key during reformation. Among other things, the protestants felt that the bread and wine were only symbols while Catholics believe that they are litterally the body and blood.
There are several other major differences that I can remember:
Catholics believe that only priests can read and interperate the Bible, while Protestants belive that it is up to each parishoner to read and understand the Bible individually.
I am drawing a blank. As i remember the others, I will put them up.

I've studied Judaism, Christianity, Islam, various forms of Paganism, (especially worship of the female divine, such as Isis), The Greek and Roman Pantheon, The Summarians, and of course the inventors of all religion and superstitions - our distant relative - the Neanderthals. Our first anscestor to invent religion and superstition were homo erectus or egaster. I've also taken an undergraduate comparative religion classe. (It was hysterical).
1. All religions borrow heavily from religions that precede it. Even before the Church voted Jesus "Divine" (by one vote), Chrisianity, had already taken the halo, for example from Egyptian son worshipers, the image of god as a bearded old man is from statues of Zeuss. Judaism, borrowed the story of the flood from the Epic of Gilgamesh (the earliest known science fiction story ever) circa 2700 B.C. In pre Islam Arabic society, paganism was rampant and Allah was worshiped as one of several main pagan gods. The encyclopedia Britanica notes that early Moslems considered Allah one of several deities, a kind of head honcho god in charge of lesser gods. (Vol 12 p. 606).
2. Some religions are crap.
3. Some religions are horsehit
4. Some religions are plain fucking nuts.
5. All religions require the willing suspension of disbelief long enough to avoid their numerous internal inconsistencies and their hatred and intollerance of faiths that differ from theirs.
6. The cummulative effect of religious indoctrination and belief is still hard at work, doing its best to exterminate our species.

My point is that it's irrelevant which particular god belongs to which particular sect. They all trace back to earliest man's primitive superstitions and fears. All modern religions share the same characteristics of the time when Erectus put red ocher on the dead. Protection from the dead was probably much more real in ancient times than now - dead bodies carry all manners of disease. if not quickly burried or cremated, it's a health hazzard.

Islam:
The messenger of Allah said: "Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, to perform the prayers, to pay the zakat, to fast in Ramadhan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so."
jews:
Judaism is one of three Abramic religions -- faiths which recognize Abraham as a Patriarch. The others are Christianity and Islam
Wiccan:
Most Wiccans believe that a creative force exists in the universe, which is sometimes called "The One" or " The All". Little can be known of this force.
HInduism:
Hinduism has grown to become the world's third largest religion, after Christianity and Islam. It claims about 762 million followers - 13% of the world's population. It is the dominant religion in India, Nepal, and among the Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Voodoo!
Vodun (a.k.a. Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo, Sevi Lwa) is commonly called Voodoo by the public. The name is traceable to an African word for "spirit". Vodun's can be directly traced to the West African Yoruba people who lived in 18th and 19th century Dahomey. Its roots may go back 6,000 years in Africa. That country occupied parts of today's Togo, Benin and Nigeria. Slaves brought their religion with them when they were forcibly shipped to Haiti and other islands in the West Indies.
Vodun was actively suppressed during colonial times. "Many Priests were either killed or imprisoned, and their shrines destroyed, because of the threat they posed to Euro-Christian/Muslim dominion. This forced some of the Dahomeans to form Vodou Orders and to create underground societies, in order to continue the veneration of their ancestors, and the worship of their powerful gods." 1 Vodun was again suppressed during the Marxist regime. However, it has been freely practiced in Benin since a democratic government was installed there in 1989. Vodun was formally recognized as Benin's official religion in 1996-FEB. It is also followed by most of the adults in Haiti. It can be found in many of the large cities in North America, particularly in the American South.
Vodun, like Christianity, is a religion of many traditions. Each group follows a different spiritual path and worships a slightly different pantheon of spirits, called Loa. The word means "mystery" in the Yoruba language.
Yoruba traditional belief included a chief God Olorun, who is remote and unknowable. He authorized a lesser God Obatala to create the earth and all life forms. A battle between the two Gods led to Obatala's temporary banishment.
There are hundreds of minor spirits. Those which originated from Dahomey are called Rada; those who were added later are often deceased leaders in the new world and are called Petro. Some of these are
Agwe: spirit of the sea
Aida Wedo: rainbow spirit
Ayza: protector
Baka: an evil spirit who takes the form of an animal
Baron Samedi: guardian of the grave
Dambala (or Damballah-wedo): serpent spirit
Erinle: spirit of the forests
Ezili (or Erzulie): female spirit of love
Mawu Lisa: spirit of creation
Ogou Balanjo: spirit of healing
Ogun (or Ogu Bodagris): spirit of war
Osun: spirit of healing streams
Sango (or Shango): spirit of storms
Yemanja: female spirit of waters
Zaka (or Oko): spirit of agriculture
Vodun rituals:
The purpose of rituals is to make contact with a spirit, to gain their favor by offering them animal sacrifices and gifts, to obtain help in the form of more abundant food, higher standard of living, and improved health. Human and Loa depend upon each other; humans provide food and other materials; the Loa provide health, protection from evil spirits and good fortune. Rituals are held to celebrate lucky events, to attempt to escape a run of bad fortune, to celebrate a seasonal day of celebration associated with a Loa, for healing, at birth, marriage and death.
Vodun priests can be male (houngan or hungan), or female (mambo). A Vodun temple is called a hounfour (or humfort). At its center is a poteau-mitan a pole where the God and spirits c

Vikings and they worship Odin. (My FIL moreso than

My FIL's side of the family celebrates Yule instead of

The way I see it all religions have three basic purposes irregardless of what god or gods it claims to believe in.
The 3 basic reasons for all religions are:
1). To explain the unexplainable. From the Greeks to modern cults they try to explain why we're here, where we are going after death and why the world is the way it is.
2). They give a 'Moral Code'. All religions tell you what you can and cannot do. ie. ten commandments, child brides (Branch Davidians), etc.
3). Keep you from questioning your status in life. It tells you that religion cannot be questioned and promises a rewarding afterlife if you suffer in this one.

No, I meant Odin, the Allfather, in Norse/Viking
mythology.
Odin was chief god of Norse mythology. A sky god, he
lived in Asgard, at the top of the world-tree, and from
the Valkyries receives the souls of half of the heroic
slain warriors, feasting with them in his great hall,
Valhalla; the rest are feasted by Freya his wife.
Odin is the wisest of Gods, but the price Odin paid for
this wisdom was very high. To gain his wisdom, Odin
chose to drink from Mimir's well. Mimir, the very wise
giant, demanded a high price for a draught from his
well - one of Odin's eyes. The All-Father did not
hesitate, however, as his desire for wisdom was so
great. Odin knew that he must have this wisdom if he
was to assure that all the events leading up to, and
past Ragnarok ("The Twilight of the Gods") were to
come to pass as they should. Odin plucked out his eye,
which Mimir kept as a pledge, and Odin's eye rests at
the bottom of Mimir's well to remind all of the sacrifice
the All-Father had made for his wisdom.
Odin was not finished yet. Odin also wanted to possess
the knowledge absolute of The Runes ("The
Mysteries"). Just as Odin's great wisdom had had to
come at such a high sacrifice, so he knew, must the
runes. Odin, wounded himself with his mighty spear
Gungnir, hung himself on Yggdrasil, the World Tree, and
for 9 days and nights Odin peered into the depths of
Niflheim and pondered the mysteries of the Runes, as a
sacrifice to himself to gain that hard-won knowledge.
With his suffering, Odin won the mysteries of The
Runes, and with his wisdom he gained power over all
things.
Like I said, a badass.

I have never heard her referred to as Freida...usually Freja/Freyja/Freija/Freya. Maybe that's some sort of germanification of the name?

Cute joke, HK. But TC is right, she is usually referred to
as Freya. She was somewhat of a badass, too. All
Norse Gods and Goddesses were.
I'm a Celt (one of the seemingly many Irish folks on the
board). My husband used to say that means I'm really
a Viking, too, since the Vikings raped and pillaged
Ireland back in the day. And I would reply, "If that's
true, why am I 5'3" but you are 6'6"?"
