View Full Version : Me? A Jeopardy contestant?!

I was just in Vegas, doing very poorly, and I mentioned to a friend that I wished there was a way to make money by playing trivia (for those of you who dont know--and why wudja?, I'm pretty damn good at trivia)...well, I come home to a phone message from a producer at Jeopardy telling me I've been randomly selected (finally) to take the test to see if I can be a contestant!! The test consists of 50 questions in 13 minutes (fill in, not multi-choice-yikes!), and if u pass, then u get to play a taped mock version of the game, then u go home and wait for them to call u again with your taping date. Finally a reason to vist L.A.!! Anyway..the whole reason for this post is so that u can wish me good luck--I'll need it, because although I'm good at trivia amongst my friends, I'm not sure how I'll do under the pressure of playing against doctors and lawyers...Weird Al's I lost at Jeopardy comes to mind. By the way, if you too wanna be a contestant, just go to Jeopardy.com.

Good Luck Chris,

I took one of those quizzes for Wheel of Fortune. They would give you 8 puzzles and you had to finish them in 8 minutes. If you got 8 out of 8 you got an automatic bid to go on to the next level.

Also have some stories about yourself so you will stand out for the producers. They like exiting people.

We need everyone to keep spreading the word about Ron and Fez. Get you friends, coworkers, hell anyone you talk to get them to listen.

I tried out for Jeopardy about five years ago. Back then all I had to do was call in and say "I want to try out" and they said "Be in LA on this day." I seem to recall that you need to get 35 out of 50, and I got 34. Whatever it was, I missed by like one. They have a recording of Alex saying "When you go home, just tell everyone you missed by one question. They'll never know!" but I really did miss by one question! They don't give you your tests back though, so you'll need to remember what you answered. My advice is:

1. Know your history. I swear out of the 50 categories at least half were variatons on history. World History. American History. Modern History. Ancient History. History. etc.

2. Know your pre-80's pop culture. My age was what fucked me when I took the test. Like I know anything about tv shows in the 60s.

3. Try to sit behind people and cheat off of them (you sit in the audience box so you're up above so the people won't be able to see you looking at their papers). Like the people that run this are keeping track. And once you get on the show it's all about if you know the category or not anyhow. Who gives a shit about 50 different categories.

When I went, there was a guy who had flown to LA three times prior just to try out, and a woman who had gone twice before. They both made it. Out of about 40 people taking the test, I think only 3 passed it the day I took the test. Those two and an old retired doctor.

TheBazile is also trying out for Jeopardy, and she's studying hard for her tryout as well.

I wanted to try out too, but my work for a company related to Jeopardy's production company disqualified me.

Imagine that, we could have had an all RonFez.net Jeopardy! competition.

I really don't think that it's anything worth studying for. I only related what I recalled being on the test as a way to prep yourself for the sorts of questions you were going to be asked. The chance that anything you study is actually going to be asked and that you'll remember the answer is extrordinarily remote. Either you know it or you don't. Kind of like trying to study for GREs or something. 99% of the vocabulary that you know is going to be because you read and you know the word, not because you read the word and its definition in a study guide before you took the test. Same idea, only you KNOW that the Jeopardy test is going to cover far more than just vocabulary. People who do well on know Jeopardy know their trivia and have minds that remember random facts. They're not people who go out and study tome after tome of history, geography, literature, silent movie stars and crossword clues beginning with A.

Oh yeah, btw when I took the test one of the questions which stumped just about everyone was "What is a ruler." (I think the answer was sometihng about what can be divided into parts but also brings order or sometihng stupid like that). So if it turns up, there you go. A freebie :)

Go Chris!
I did the email thing to Jeopardy about 2 years ago when it said at the end "We'll be in your town on ----" and they sent me a letter saying be at so-and-so hotel in manhattan, and bring the letter.
I never went.
Oh well.

BUT!!!

You can Most Certainly prepare yourself for the game and increase your odds a LOT, i'd say:

1. You're a Cop; I'm a teacher. Speaking in front of people is a piece of cake for me now; but I was scared shitless the first time it was just 30 kids and me. I'm guessing with your line of work you'll have no problem here.

2. Some people like me hate being Videotaped. Well; it's gonna be a lot more then that. I'd sit in front of a camcorder and have someone fire questions at me from a triv book and try to answer them. Then I'd look at the tape. If nothing else, maybe this will decrease the chances of getting nerves due to cameras. Or not.

3. There are Definite strategies used by people to win. Finding Daily Doubles, how to buzz in [this is HUGE! if you hit the button before alex finishes the Q; you can't buzz in for like 1 second or something; an eternity for other players to get in. I believe there may even be a light somewhere near the board that lights up when alex is done talking/you can buzz in]; keeping your score in the positive [my only nightmare is making it on and then NOT making it to final jeopardy], etc et al.

4. Watch Jeopardy and see what yer good at and what you suck at. Study the stuff you suck at, if ONLY the very teenyest bit. When the word "Shakespeare" appears anywhere, I'm done. I know next to zero. But I'd learn like 5 factoids about him, and at least a couple of titles besides romeo and juliet.

5. Two book recommendations for the Trivia Nut:
The Dictionary Of Cultural Literacy
10,000 Questions: The Ultimate Trivia Book

I forget the authors so I'll post them later, but the first book is awesome on all that weird stuff you never learned about the past, and the second is really up to date with Trivia for peeps like us who like to show how how much we know about [ack!] the TV show Friends.

Or maybe I'm dead wrong and it's all a farce because of....The MATRIX!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Mike The Teacher. . .

I appeared on a cable-access TV trivia show when I was in high school, and, back then, I had terrible stage fright. Our team made it to the quarter-finals during my Senior year, when I served as captain. One of my chorale coach's friends from his hometown happened to catch me on the show and expressed his admiration for my poise and knowledge. . . what he doesn't know is that the entire time, I was numb, with nasty butterflies in my stomach. I don't even remember which questions I got wrong; it felt like such a dream!

I have since overcome my stage fright enough to sing in front of total strangers with my eyes open and sober. This is a HUGE deal to me, considering the fact that I still think I have a rotten singing voice.

Just for clarification, when I say "study", I tend to mean playing trivia games - Jeopardy! and Trivial Pursuit online are among my favorites because they time your response and I need to be faster on the trigger finger - or just gearing myself up for the game. I plan to do lots of yoga in the next 2 weeks to relax myself. And not thinking past the qualifying test is probably a good idea, too.

I'm great at pre-'80s pop culture (I loved the 60's when I was in high school), most history (as Doogie can attest, although I'm a li'l weak in some time periods), but I have lots of trouble with sports and, sadly, current events.

Go knock 'em dead, Chris! I'm sure you're going to do just fine. :)

Congrats Chris.

I tried out for the college version when I was in ....college...and passed the test. Seemed easy to me, and when I watch the college shows now they always seem to have easier questions.

What messed me up was the mock taped version. I got performance anxiety and got the flop sweats like that guy in Broadcast News. I still managed to do well, but the producer said I looked very nervous, fidgety, etc. But they still wanted me and said there was nothing a make up artist couldn't hide.

I went to my doctor who prescribed Inderal. I already had a little Xanax. But I just wimped out. I kept thinking about not getting one answer right and all my friends seeing me on TV. So I never went back.

OK, so why am I telling you this? Because assuming you do well on the test, I hope you, as previous people mentioned, are OK in front of a camera. People who know me now can't believe I had what they now call social anxiety (stage fright) at the time...but that's a big part of doing well on the show too, not blanking out. Not to get you all nervous or anything....

As far as studying, I didn't. My weakness in trivia is what I refer to the "pink pegs" - the Entertainment questions on Trivial Pursuit. I can kick ass on Science, Arts, Sports, History, Geography, but ask me who starred on Who's The Boss? and I'll tell you I never heard of the show. I attribute this to the fact I don't watch much TV and never did. But I've been doing better cause I read a lot of magazines.

Back to the show. Some pimply kid from University of Indiana and some mousy chick from Swarthmore College are all that I remember from my trial. They seemed to do well cause they were so nerdy they probably didn't have friends to begin with; therefore no one to get embarrassed in front of.

I have a friend who was on regular Jeopardy and he said the buzzer is important, but it all comes down to the categories they have on that particular show.

"Your Mom's Box for $400 please, Alex."

GOOD LUCK!!

BTW think about what you want Alex to ask you about at the end of the first round if you DO make it on the show. They ask you to write a bit about yourself so he has something to go on before you take the test. That was the hardest part of it!

Chris You'll bring some much needed class to that show. And I think your worring to much you don't have to answer correctly if you bring your gun and intimidate them.
